Biography

Ireland Native
George Goold was born in Ireland.

George Goold was most likely born in County Cork, Ireland. He was the son of Unknown Goold and Ellinor Morrogh.[1]

George Goold lived at Ballydaheen, Mallow, County Cork. Henry Dawley originally leased the lands of Ballydaheen by indenture to Walter Dawley and George Goold on the last day of April 1688, with part of the lands demised by Walter Dawley on 24 April 1674 to George Goold by indenture. Walter Dawley of Dannenstown also leased part of Ballydaheen to Ellinor Goold als Morrogh, widow, the mother of George Goold, on 22 May 1678 for 41 years. This lease was renewed in 1718 by Randall Clayton to George Goold. Further renewals were made to descendants of George's eldest son, Henry Goold.[1][2][3]

George Goold married and had at least the following children:[4]

  1. Henry Goold m Anne Hennessy[5][6]
  2. Francis Goold m Elizabeth Dawley[5]
  3. Anstace Goold m _White

George's descendants, the Goold Baronets, were recorded as a junior branch of the main Goold line of Knockraha in Cork by Burke.[6] This may not be correct (see Research Notes).

Burke and William Betham (the father of Sir William Betham) also state that the family changed the name from Gould to Goold.[6][7] Archival records from Cork clearly show that "Goold" was in common use in the family well before this line was established, and that the surname could be spelled as Goold, Gould, Goulde, Gold and Golde.

George Goold most likely died in Ballydaheen, County Cork, Ireland after 1718 when he signed a lease renewal for Ballydaheen.[1] Ballydaheen passed down to his son Henry and Henry's eldest son.

Research Notes

  • Although the memorials from the Registry of Deeds strongly indicate that George Goold is the father of Henry they do not state this directly. Cody-939 03:04, 4 September 2022 (UTC)
  • The birth date is estimated from the age at death of his son Henry and the marriage dates of his sons. Cody-939 03:04, 4 September 2022 (UTC)

William Betham[7] outlines the pedigree of the Goold Baronets. The grandson of Henry Goold, Francis, was the first Goold baronet created in 1801. The pedigree in this publication has some inaccuracies: Cody-939 03:04, 4 September 2022 (UTC)

  • it has Henry Goold as the son of James Goold and Ellen Martell- this is not correct as Henry was born in 1683. Henry is the son of George Goold.
  • it has Henry Goold married to a Coppinger, which is not correct. He married Anne Hennessy. It may be that his mother, the wife of George Goold, was a Coppinger.
  • it also does not tie this Goold line in with the Knockraha line- see Ignatius Gould. This requires further research.
