Biography

Alexander (Gordon) Gordon Provost of Aberdeen is a member of Clan Gordon.

Alexander was born before 1637 (in 1626, according to Find a Grave.)[1]

In 1688, Alexander Gordon was elected Provost of Aberdeen, Scotland. This is a position of high honor and distinction, wherein he would have convened and presided over Aberdeen Council meetings, accepting motions, ruling on procedural matters, using a casting vote when necessary, and maintaining order in the chamber.

He passed away after 1665. In the book Memorial of the family Skene of Skene, from the family papers Alexander Gordon, Provost of Aberdeen, is listed as the father of George Gordon who married Janet Skene on the 27th of January 1694. Janet Skene was baptized May 9, 1665.

On Alexander and Grisell's grave stone, it says that Alexander Gordon, husband, Provost of Aberdeen, Scotland died 2 March, 1692. It is a flat black stone. Alexander's information goes around the edge of the grave stone. The complete inscription says, "Alexander Gordon, Provost of Aberdeen, departed this life The 2of March 1692, Under The Hope of A Blessed Resurrection." Grisell's name is also on this stone, but the death date has not been filled in. She must have been still alive and died later. The Stone is black and flat and is in St. Nicholas Church Yard in Aberdeen City, Scotland.

Family

Alexander Gordon's wife, as listed on her tombstone, and on the baptismal record of his children at St. Nicholas' Church in Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, is Grissell (with a wide variety of spellings) Walker. The couple had (at least) seven children that we have found record of, listed below:

  1. Margaret Gordon - christened 24 Apr 1656
  2. John Gordon - christened 4 Feb 1658
  3. Alexander Gordon, Jr. - christened 3 June 1659
  4. Isobel Gordon - christened 16 June 1661
  5. Janet Gordon - christened 8 Feb 1663
  6. George Gordon - christened 14 Jun 166
  7. James Gordon - christened 12 Jul 1667

Research Notes

We have seen Grissell Walker, Alexander's wife, connected in many places on the internet to Grissell Walker, daughter of John Walker and Jean Gowie/Gowanes, of Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland. This would be highly unlikely, however, as she was christened 28 Mar 1644,[2] which would make her only eleven years old when her first child, Margaret, was born.
