Biography

Alexander Gorrie was born in Scotland.

Alexander was born on 11 November 1796 at Strathmartine, Forfarshire, Scotland and baptised on 27 November 1796 at Mains and Strathmartine^[1]. He was the first son of Thomas Gorrie/Gurrie and Cecilia/Sessan Dewar.

He married Isobel Ruxton on 8 March 1831 at Arbroath, Forfarshire^[2]. They had at least ten children.

In 1841 he was a flax spinner aged 38 (younger than his actual age of 43) living with his wife Isabella (28) and four children - Margaret (10), Catherine (8), Thomas (6) and Isabella (8 months) - at Henry Wynd, Abbotshall, Fife^[23]. Two of their children, David and Helen had died at a young age. There were a number of other families at that same address^[24]. By 1851 he was a millspinner in flax employing one man, ten women, two boys and three girls, aged 48, born at Mains, Forfarshire and living at Leys Mill, Inverkeilor, Forfarshire^[25][26]. In his household were his wife Isobel (38), seven children - Margaret (19), Catherine (17), Isobel (10), Alexander (9), Cecilia (6), Betsy (3) and George (1) - and five female mill workers.

Alexander died on 2 January 1852 at Arbroath, Forfarshire^[27].
