Thomas was born about October 1834 probably at Arbroath, Forfarshire, Scotland and baptised on 24 October 1834 at St Vigeans[1]. He was the first son and third child of Alexander Gorrie and Isabella Ruxton, named for his father's father.
In 1841 he aged 6 was living with his parents, Alexander (a flax spinner aged at least 38) and Isabella (28), and three sisters - Margaret (10), Catherine (8), and Isabella (8 months) - at Linktown, High Street, Abbotshall, Fife[2]. There were a number of other families at that same address[3].
Thomas died on 10 March 1853 aged 18 at Arbroath[4] and was buried on 14 March[5].
Research Notes
Thomas has a baptism given on FamilySearch and on a couple of Ancestry trees, but no source for that has yet been found. The family should have still been in Arbroath at the time of his birth before moving to Abbotshall, Fife.
Thomas is not listed with his parents and siblings on the 1851 Census when they had returned to Forfarshire from Fife. Nor has he been found anywhere else yet. There is a Thomas Gorrie, an apprentice shoemaker aged 14, in the household of William Black (a shoemaker aged 40) at Ferry Port on Craig, Cupar, Fife in the 1851 Census[6]. However, that one was born in Fife (although birth locations are not always correct for non-family members). But, there is a Thomas Gorrie born in 1836 at Ferry Port on Craig, Fife[7] who is more likely to be this one still living there. (Dickson-4413 04:45, 22 December 2023 (UTC))
