Biography

Joseph Grable is guessed to have been born about 1725. This is a fair match to his siblings and assuming that Joseph was oldest. This date also matches the estimate for his wife, Mary Rowland (d/o Johannes) and fits with the estimates of birth for their children. Joseph's parents came to America from the Holy Roman Empire and were of Swiss heritage. Father Michael came to America in 1727. It is unclear if Joseph's parents were married in Germany or America. Joseph's children found land in what was once Virginia and then Kentucky. Joseph was envolved. Joseph died 1810 in Fayette Co., Pa.

Joseph's father-in-law John Roland, was a weaver and lived in the Mennonite/Brethren settlement near Mill Creek in Leacock Twp, Lancaster Co. PA. Well after John Roland died, (an unrelated) Henry Roland bought a mill nearby. It was near Mill Creek at the border of Earl and Leacock townships. But, the mill was formerly Eby's Mill, owned by Theodorus Eby. Mary, the daughter of Theodorus Eby married Michael Graybill, a man who lived adjacent to Roland's Mill. Michael Graybill's will includes a child named Joseph. Surely the child was Joseph of this profile.

Joseph Krebiel (Grable) and his wife were baptized 1747 in the Conestoga Brethren Church and reportedly were involved with Conrad Beissel. Beissel had lived near Mill Creek prior to moving to Ephrata.

In 1749, Joseph was in Washington Co., Md where he owned land in Marsh Hundred. He was naturalized in 1765 as witnessed by Elder George Martin. He was in Luzerne Twp of Fayette Co., Pa by 1769. In early 1790’s, he went to Jefferson and Nelson Cos., Ky but went back to Fayette Co., Pa. where he died 1810.

"Joseph Grable ... From Shelby Co. KY Court Records p. 89 (1806): On motion of Christopher Cryble having granted heir to perpetuate testimony on the following entry to wit 1780 May 27 Joseph Cryble .. entry four hundred acres on a treasury warrant on a small creek of Floyd's Fort about four miles south of Harrod's trace to include some cabbins" and Zechariz Carpenter, James Logan and John Brown or any two of them are appointed commissioners to the disposition for the purpose aforesaid returnable him to." This warrant may have been to Joseph Grable, husband of Mary Rowland, though he was a bit old to have received a warrant for military service. This Joseph had sons Christopher and Joseph. Christopher was apparently the one giving testimony, Joseph Jr. who married Lydia Miller went to Kentucky and died there in 1805.

In 1807, Shelby Co. KY Court Records p. 125: The commissioners appointed to perpetrate testimony on an entry of 400 acres in the name of Joseph Grable as'e on a treasury warrant - returned those proceedings with the deposition of Squire Boone & on motion of Christopher Grable the same is ordered of record.

1810 Joseph Krable having produced into court credentials of his being in regular communion with the Dunkard Baptist Society and of his being a minister in the ? since having taken the oath of allegiance to this Commonwealth and entered with bond oath Adam Mustotto, Harrison Philips his securities in the penalty of ? permitted license matrimony. (This date and being a minister is more likely for the younger Joseph, son of Christopher Grable.)

In 1788 one Joseph Grable had obtained patent to a tract of land in Luzerne township, southeast of what later became Bridgeport, and adjoining or close to the tract of Rees Cadwallader. He built a blockhouse on the tract that he named Clover Pasture. He also laid out part of the tract into lots; probably the thought was that, even although the settlers would be mostly farmers, it would be safer for them to live close together and under the protection of the blockhouse. An inscription on a metal plaque marks the site of this blockhouse.

The birth year and location as well as the death year and location are estimates coming from merger with the profile created for father of John Grable. Mary Rowland as spouse is the principle reason for accepting the merger.

Grable-123 and Grable-110 appear to represent the same person because: Joseph Grable age and spouse are the same. I have entered some descendants. Joseph's parents are unknown.
