Biography

George Granger came free to the Colony of South Australia (1836-1900)
Flag of Cambridgeshire (adopted 2015)
George Granger was born in Cambridgeshire, England.

George was born in 1826 in Cambridgeshire, England to parents Benjamin and Mary Grainger. In 1849 he married Mary Ann (Ann) Rawlinson and had two daughters, Mary Ann and Emma. His wife Ann died and he married Harriet Woolard and immediately set out with his family to emigrate to South Australia, arriving in Adelaide aboard the Aurora in 1856. The family party included George and his new wife, Harriet, George's daughters Mary Ann Granger and Emma Granger and Harriet's two children, Charlotte Woolard and George Woolard. A James Granger aged 19, also an agricultural labourer from Cambridgeshire and posssibly George Granger's brother, arrived on the same ship, but he died in 1857 and is buried at the West Terrace Cemetery, Adelaide (unknown location).

The family settled in Cygnet River on Kangaroo Island. One account says they took as their home a slab hut, the abandoned office of the South Australian Company. Harriet promptly produced three children, Eliza, Harriet and Jonas. There was a sawmill at Cygnet River where railway sleepers were cut. George's wife Harriet died in 1862 and interestingly in the same year another woman, Anne Micken, gave birth to George's child. The baby, a son named William, did not last out the year.

Five years later, aged 41, George married his third wife, Janet Highet. Janet produced another 3 children, another William, Edith and George Henry. George senior died from accidental drowning in the Bay of Shoals, Kangaroo Island, in 1881. He was 55 and had fathered 9 children. George does not figure prominently in recorded history, but there are a few anecdotes eg those in the Kangaroo Island Courier of 1910, which also gives accounts of his accidental drowning. Research Notes

  • Notes by Anne Tichborne August, 2017:

I can't find a record of George marrying Anne Micken despite fathering her child. The baby died in its first year and George went on to marry Janet Highet. I've removed Anne Micken as a spouse but her child William remains as George's child. (See Wikitree guide for unmarried parents) She could be either of these from.Rootsweb: ID: I125643 Name: Anna MICKAN Sex: F Birth: 10 May 1856 in South Australia, Australia Death: Y Note: Birth record - Father : Johann MICKAN. • Notes by Anne Tichborne 2019. Plenty of online trees saying his parents were Benjamin Gally Grainger and Mary Ann (nee Stiff) but I haven't found an actual registry citation. Amazingly, these trees also claim that Benjamin came to Australia, but why didn't he come to the same place as his son George? Very odd. He's supposed to have died in Yass, New South Wales.

Grainger-193 and Granger-1366 appear to represent the same person because: I've proposed merging my George into yours as yours using the Granger spelling which is the only one used in Australia.
