Thomas Herbert or "Bert T." as he liked to be called, had a tragic beginning to his adult life. His first two young wives and infants died in childbirth or soon after. He erected beautiful marble markers with cherubs on their graves in the Centerville Cemetery.
He was so devastated that he left Leon County about 1896 and travelled for many years. His family had no idea where he was. One day, his brother in Centerville received a simple post card of a hound dog with a sad face. It said "send money, ready to come home, Bert." This was in 1901.
It is said that he walked all the way to California, hiked over White Horse Pass in the Yukon and almost died of smallpox in California. He believed that the only way he survived was God's mercy and carried a small bible with him everywhere for the rest of his life.
My grandmother, Margaret Jane "Marguerite" Dunsworth was a talented milliner working at the Gresham & Sons General Merchandise store in Centerville. She made ladies hats to match their fashionable Victorian dresses and intricate French cut-worth linens. They were married in 1912.
Bert was so brave to marry and begin again, but they were happy and had 6 healthy children. Both Thomas Herbert and Margaret Jane used different names as adults.
Thomas Herbert "Bert T." held offices as Justice of the Peace and County Clerk for many years in Leon County. He was a kind and gentle man who was well loved by everyone. He was ill with congestive heart failure for a long time and had to sell his land and to support his family.
My grandmother Marguerite doted on Bert and told me once, "I have always been very proud to wear the Gresham name."
