Notes

Burke (1883) states:

"In the 6th year of King Richard I [1195], that monarch conferred the manor of Thurrock, co. Essex (afterwards called Thurrock Grey), upon Henry de Grey, which grant was confirmed by King John, who vouchsafed, by special charter, to permit the said Henry de Grey to hunt the hare and fox in any land belonging to the crown, save the king's own demesne-parks. In the 1st Henry III [1216], he had also a grant of the manor of Grimston, co. Nottingham, and having afterwards m. Isolda, niece and heiress of Robert Bardolf, shared in the inheritance of his lands. By this lady Henry de Grey had issue, Richard, John, William, Robert, Walter, and Henry."[5]

ONDB states:

"In 1718 The genealogy of the most noble and ancient family of Grey, compiled from the Grey of Ruthin archives, claimed a common eleventh-century ancestor, Anchitel, for the various noble houses of Grey. The historic figure from whom most of the Greys spring is, however, Henry Grey (d. 1219), of Grays Thurrock, Essex. Henry had three sons, each of whom founded a landed family. Richard Grey, the eldest, was the grandfather of Henry Grey, first Baron Grey of Codnor (d. 1308), whose line survived until 1496. Henry's third son, William Grey, established a gentry family at Sandiacre in Derbyshire, which expired in Edward II's reign." [6]

The top pedigree chart is wrong Rollo was never a Duke he was a Count. Richard (1) m Gunnora De Crepons son was the first duke of Normandy. Further the parentage noted here is incorrect, his parentage is unknown. So, this needs to be disconnected as an unreliable source.

This is a pre 1500 profile and would expect this to be corrected,

GREY FAMILY OF CODNOR, DERBYSHIRE

The origins of the male line of this family is obscure with Henry I de Grey [died 1219] as the confirmed patriarch of two prominent baronial families. Very little is known of Henry de Grey other than that he married Isolda, a granddaughter of Hugh I Bardolf [died 1176] and his wife Isabel, her mother their second daughter. Isolda appears to have been the only child of her unknown parents, both being deceased prior to 1225 when the estates of acquired during their lifetimes by Hugh I de Bardolf and his eldest son Hugh II de Bardolf [died 1203] were inherited by the heirs of the latter's five sisters following the death of their younger brother in 1225. Henry was the acquire the manor of Thurrock by purchase, was holding the manor of Codnor in 1201 and granted the manor of Grimston by 1216 as of the inheritance of his wife. Henry and Isolda were the parents of three sons, Richard, the eldest, who became the patriarch of the family of Codnor, John, their second son, became the patriarch of the families of Wilton and Ruthin, whilst William the he youngest son, becoming the patriarch of the family of Sandiacre, with the male line extinct before the reign of Edward III.

Also look at this Site for nearly everybody else.

This will really help you out.

And if somebody knows how to post this on a Grey Thread or any other please feel free. I don't know how, I just got on Wiki Tree. I doubt many will see it here where I posted it.

I can't stress enough to need to put the title in the nickname to keep them all straight.
