Biography

Uriah was born in the Bahamas on 18 Jan 1827, as stated in the Dolly Mae records.[1] His parents were Thomas Griffin and Sarah Ann Weverley.[2] He was christened on 26 Jul 1829. His grave, however, gives his birth date as 11 May 1835.

He immigrated to Key West between 1869 and 1872, depending on which census record one views.

In 1880, he was living in Key West, Monroe County, Florida, with wife, Matilda, and daughters, Grace and Mary. Mary appeared to have a an infant daughter, Sarah, with her. There was also a 30 year old Albert Griffin living with the family, but the relationship is noted only as "other."[3] Uriah was working as a house carpenter.

In 1885, it was just him and Matilda, and their 7 year old daughter, Estella.[4] Apparently Estella was also known as Grace.

By 1900, Grace had married John Knowles, and they were living with her parents, still in Key West. Uriah apparently owned or worked in a grocery , and his son-in-law was a cigar maker.[5]

In 1910, Uriah was living alone, although he was listed as married. His occupation was again listed as house carpenter.[6]

Uriah and Matilda were mentioned in the death record of their daughter, Mary A Griffin , in 1931. Mary was a widow at the time of her death.[7] She was the wife of Albert Griffin who was living with the family in 1880. Matilda was listed as Matilda Roberts, however, not Malone, as is her maiden name on Find A Grave.

Uriah passed away in 1913, several years after his wife. Burial was in the Key West Cemetery in Key West, Monroe County, Florida.[8]
