When John's father, Jacob "Graft" signed his will on 15 March 1760, he stated that his son John was deceased. [2] The will directed John's widow, Els Graft, to care for their four children (Jacob, John, Elizabeth and Abraham Graft) for twelve years, teaching them to read and write "midling well." If she was still a widow at the end of the twelve years, she could remain in the house, otherwise she was to leave "peaceably." When her son John reached the age of 21, he and his brother Jacob were to divide their grandfather's 300-acre plantation. The two younger children were to receive money rather than land.
When John's brother, Benjamin Graff, wrote his will in 1810, he left a bequest for "the Children of my Brother John Graff deceased." [3]

John's date of death (after 1772) seems to be incorrect, as well, since he was dead by the time his father wrote his will in 1760.
