Biography

Hans Herr descendant #180 [1]

Veronica (Groff) Herr seems to have gone by a variety of names (Veronica, Feronica, Frances and Fanny). At the time, these were common nicknames for each other.

In her father's 1760 will, she was referred to as "my daughter Frances wife to Christely Hare." [2]

Her brother Benjamin, in his 1810 will, referred to her as "my Sister Veronica Herr." [3]

Fanny Groff married Christian Herr (Herr decendant #27) as his second wife. They had three children: Barbara, Elizabeth and Christian. Christian (her husband) died in August 1772, just 5 months after their youngest child was born.

Veronica died in 1826. She is buried in the Willow Street Mennonite Church Cemetery in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Her simple gravestone reads: "1826 Veronic[a?] Herr" The letter N was written backwards, which was not uncommon on gravestones at that time. [4]

"Feronica" Herr, of Lampeter Township, Lancaster County, "being far advanced in years," signed her will (with her mark) on 21 April 1821. It was proved on 22 August 1826. The beneficiaries were: [5]

  • Her son, Christian Herr, who was to receive 254 acres of land in Strasburg Township.
  • Her daughter Barbara, the wife of John Neff
  • Her daughter Elizabeth, the wife of Jacob Neff
  • Executor: son Christian Herr
  • Witnesses: John Herr and Christian Herr "Pequea"
