User ID: 60FC4DF4ABDD471697FE383FF86613686742

Note: @NI793@ NI793@ NOTE/Burleigh #568.>"Our County and Its People", Tioga County, New York - "Josiah Gile or Guiles, son of Henry, was born in Otsego county, New York and came to this town in 1836, settled near Pipe Creek and took up a lot of wild land where he built a log house and cleared up a farm. He married Mary Baker, daughter of Daniel Baker. They were the parents of ten children. ..." (I believe they came to Tioga in 1826, not 1836.)

1810 Census AIS Saratoga County, New York, Name: Josiah Gile. Maybe another one ? because #793 was with his father in 1820 in Otsego County, father used spelling Guile and Guiles. Yes, not this one - probably Joseph son of Benjamin.

Kathy Unsel Gilliswbgillis (at)snet.net Federal census index lookups-New York-1810-GILLIS (I've included similar names in case of spelling errors by census takers. )Page number on left is page number found in CENSUS INDEX. Info includes name, state, county, town, page number of actual census year. 1810 New York Census Index Page 1466 Gile, Josiah New York, Saratoga County. 255 1810 20010-21011 (Husband, wife, 5 children and a mother (?)

1820 Census AIS Laurens, Otsego County, New York page 129, Name: Josiah Guild. Census shows 2 males 27+, 1 female 27+, 2 girls and 2 boys 10-. Does not fit this Josiah ???

1840 Census AIS Tioga, Tioga, New York; Name: Josiah Gile. Family Group Record from Mildred Miller, shows Josiah Gile, males 1 5-10, 2 10-15, 1 15-20, 1 50-60; females 1 5-10, 115-20, 1 40-50. The males - Daniel, Rufus, George, Josiah check out, we are missing 1 girl who was 15-20 in 1840.

1850 Census Tioga, Tioga County, New York, age 64, b. New York; Name: Josiah Guile. Farmer, with wife Mary, son George 21, Dau. Mary 19; son Josiah Jr. 16.

1855 State Census Tioga County, New York age 67 (?), Name: Josiah Giles, with wife Mary, son Josiah Jr. age 19.

Could the following biography be in error, and Josiah actually moved to Tioga in1825 or 1826, instead of 1836 as stated? It would fit son Josiah being born in Tioga, and would make Rufus as a son more plausible. Maybe biography actually refers to Leonard being the one who moved in 1836. According to biography Josiah had 10 children - including Rufus, we are only up to 6.

"Our County and Its People", Tioga County, New York- "Josiah Gile or Guiles, son of Henry, was born in Otsego county, New York and came to this town in 1836, settled near Pipe Creek and took up a lot of wild land where he built a log house and cleared up a farm. He married Mary, daughter of Daniel Baker. They had ten children. His son Leonard married Louise, daughter of Samuel and Diadama( Green) Cook, and about 1853 located on the farm which he now owns and where he resides. This farm he cleared up. Of his ten children nine are living: Samuel, of Tioga Center, married Sarah Burger; Maritta (Mrs. W. C. Green), of Tioga Center; Lydia A. (Mrs. Gilbert Hart), of Candor; Adelaide (Mrs. E.Merritt), of Owego; Andrew of Tioga Center (married Lydia Dewey); Adelbert, of Tioga; Willis, of Tioga, married Emeline Cook; George of Tioga, married Flora Bergusen. Waterman Guiles, of Tioga Center, born 1 November 1844, enlisted in Company F., 179th New York Regiment., and was in the battles of Pegram Farm and the series of engagements before Petersburg, and was discharged 8 June 1865. He married Susan D. Brooks. He has been a farmer since returning to civil life. In 1887, he came to Tioga Center. Mr. and Mrs. Guiles have three children, Cornelius, Walter and Mattie. Mr. Guiles is a member of Hagadorn Post, G.A.R.,of Halsey Valley."

28 May 1992 a call from descendant of Bob Guiles of Syracuse, New York, confirms Tioga County, New York has much material and will send. He is in charge of the computer deptartment of Syracuse University, his father and 3x before him were all Methodist ministers, the first was Leonard, who, in his 30's had a vision out in the field and call from the Lord, then went into ministry. Says "Josiah Gile changed surname to Guiles, and all descendants use that."

Family records from Bob Guiles - "Came to the Town of Tioga, New York in 1836, settled near Pipe Creek and took up a lot of wild land where he built a log house and cleared up a farm. He and Mary had 10 children." Only 2 in his records.

1920 census Tioga Center, Tioga, New York age 84, b. New York - with Arthur G. VanNorstron, his son in law. Not this one, maybe his son?

Tree Talks, Vol. 4, #3, September 1964 - Births in Town of Tioga - Gile, Son to Rufus and Rhoda Ann Gile, 22 December 1847

Tree Talks, Vol. 13, #4, December 1973 Tioga County, Page 46 (Shows headings: Name - 1861 - Residence) Guiles, William, 26 August 1861 Residence - Big Island, New York. From the other listings, I take this to be deaths. Could this refer to one of the unidentified sons of Josiah Guiles of Tioga?

From: "NEIL I. GUILES" <NGUILES (at)compuserve.com Date: Tuesday 29 September 1998 21:02:59 -0400 "I read with interest the info on Wm. Guiles- Tree Talks Vol. 13 , December 1973 ( Your note pages aren't numbered ! ) Residence- Big Island, 26 August 1861. The Big Island they refer to is also called Hiawatha Island. It is east of Owego, New York and farther east of Tioga Center. It is the largest island in the Susquehanna River. It is famous here and was inhabited. The Historical Society recently bought it at auction to preserve it. There were several farms on it and a hotel. It is most conceivable that he lived there and it's close to all the others. It would be in the direct river route to Tioga Center and points west. Records would be in the town of Owego. I'll ck. it out. Owego, Indian -originally Ah-We-Ga, was burned by the Sullivan ? Expedition of the Revolutionary War. This whole valley was cleared of Indians including Tioga Center. Tioga has Indian ancestry too."
