Biography

Herrick Gile (or Guile) was a son of Henry Guile and Priscilla (Herrick) Guile. He was born 2 June 1806. ^[1][2]

He was married to Jane Butler. Their children were Mary (married name Broughton), Julia (married name Ladd), Ransom, and Edward. Burleigh's 1887 genealogy indicates that they were all living in Westfield, Pennsylvania.^[1]

He died at Westfield, Pennsylvania, on 7 March 1887 and is buried in Swimley (a.k.a. Swimelar) Cemetery in Tioga County, Pennsylvania. The grave marker gives his name as Herrick Guile and gives his life dates.^[2]

1850 census Laurens, Otsego Co. NY age 45, b. NY Farmer $600. Name HerrickGuile. Could he have moved in 1850 and been counted in Otsego and Chenango Co.s?

1855 census Laurens, Otsego Co. NY age 50(52?), b. Montgomery Co. NY, name Herick Gile, married, in town 40 years, farmer, prop value $100. with wife Jane, children Orrin, Jacob, Edgar, Albert, Julia, Nancy Ann.

1860 census, Westfield, Tioga, PA. age 58 b. Fla (Florida, Montgomery, NY?)Farmer $1500/300 name Herrick Guile. Age off - error in reading census?

Swimelar Cem PA records, show b. and d. dates, name Herrick Gile, but tombstone reads "Guile" - visited by Wilbur and Cindy Guile, Indiana, PA 6 Oct 1993.B. 2 Jun 1806, d. 7 Mar 1888.

Genealogical and Personal History of No. PA by Jordan 1913, listing the family of Josiah Guile, does not show Herrick.

Burleigh Misc. p. 324, lists a Mrs. Priscilla M. Gile, widow of Herrick, Philadelphia, PA (in 1887).

FGR received 6/24, 96 from descendant Mary Lois Strunk, 38 W. Harrison St., Tunkhannock, PA 18657 - she has the records inherited from her half brother,Arthur Warters, who did a lot of research, and his main source was a first cousin, Lisle Ladd, who lived in Westfield, PA and knew some of the family members, grew up with the family stories. Another source was Rhoda Ladd - head of the Tioga Co. Historical Society. She commented after listing all the birth dates, - "I do have some pictures & also pictures of gravestones. There were no details about a Henry & it was assumed by my cousin (Glenn Ladd - who was related to both Guiles & Ladd - that H. S. and M. J. had died as infants.) This is pure speculation, but there was another Mary J. among the children. ... My grandmother, born in 1868, was named Allie for her uncle [Albert who had just died]. I have been to her home which was on a small dairy farm. She had planned the house down to the floor boards- one cherry - one walnut, taken from trees on their land. As far as I know they were poor farmers just getting by. During my father's childhood they also made and shipped maple syrup from their own "sugar bush"....(Tells of her father's musical ability passed down thru' the family)
