Obituary: Huron Pioneer Dies Yesterday

Evening Huronite, Thursday, February 20, 1936

Mrs. Joseph Daum, Sr., Resident of City 50 Years. Succumbs To Long Illness

The death yesterday afternoon at 4:50 o'clock of Mrs. Joseph Daum, Sr., a pioneer resident of Huron, followed a stroke of paralysis suffered Tuesday afternoon. Mrs. Daum, who has made her home at 273 Second Street Southwest, for 50 years, had been in ill health since 1928, when she was injured in an auto accident. Anna Lovisa Gustafson was born near Stockholm, Sweden, June 18, 1857, living there until she was 24 years old, when she came to the United States. She came directly to Lake Preston to make her home with two brothers. On October 28, 1885, she was married in Huron to Joseph Daum and she has made her home here continuously ever since. In addition to her husband she is survived by four children: Mrs. Kathryn Johnson, Huron; Harry C. Daum of Glasgow, Mont.; Joseph Louis Daum and Roy William Daum, both of Huron. She is also survived by six grandchildren, a brother, Gus Gustafson of Arlington; a sister, Mrs. Hannah Olson of Ogden, Utah, and two brothers who live in Sweden. The funeral services will be held Saturday morning at 10 o'clock at St. Martin's Catholic church with Msgr. D. F. Desmond officiating. Burial will be made in St. Martin's cemetery. Mrs. Daum was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America and of the Royal Neighbor lodge.
