Biography

1776 Project
Captain John Haile served with 2nd Spartan Regiment, South Carolina Militia (Brandon's) during the American Revolution.

John Haile is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A049258.

Captain John Haile/Hale was born circa 1755. During the American Revolutionary War, John was residing in the Ninety-Six District of South Carolina. John served as a Quartermaster under Captain John Thompson and also served with Colonel Brandon. After the War, John was reimbursed for supplies furnished in support of the Patriots during the War and also reimbursed for a lost horse. [1]

John is honored for his military and patriotic service by the Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution as DAR Ancestor #A049258. DAR records indicate that John died before June 24, 1816, in the Union District of South Carolina, and that his wife's name was Ruth Mitchell. Applications for membership in the Society of the DAR have been made by the descendants of his son, Thomas, who married Mary A. (?nee); and of his daughter, Elizabeth, who married Thomas Stribling. [2]

John and Ruth became the parents of ten children. The first child, Elizabeth "Betsy" Haile was born in South Carolina. The other 9 were born in Hawkins County, Tennessee.

John Haile's will 15 August 1807. Obituary Marion Star, Marion, South Carolina, issue of Saturday, 29 June 1816 SAYS HE DIED MONDAY, June 17, 1816 at his resdence, age 70. genforum haile post Janine Jones July 20, 2001.

HaileGenforum Post #315 by Francine Jones: From the Marion Star, Marion, SC, Issue of Saturday, June 29, 1816. "Died, at his residence in Union District on Monday the 17th, inst. JOHN HAILE, Esq. in the 70th year of his age..he was a parent to a numerous offspring, a valuable citizen, generous neighbor, a sincere friend. His door was never shut against the poor and indigent, and by repeated acts of benevolence he has gained the esteem of all who knew him..His associations in life, only knew how to appreciate his worth."

John did not die soon after he made his will in 1807, but in 1816. His wife, Ruth, died in 1840.
