Biography

John Halbert was born 11 Oct 1773 in Caroline County, Virginia. [1] He was a son of William Anson Halbert Sr. and Elizabeth Hill.[2] About 1795 he married Margaret Harper.[citation needed]

John and Margaret had eleven children:[3]

  1. Percival Pickens Halbert, b. 23 Feb 1796; d. 28 Oct 1864; m. 25 Jul 1822, Jane Owen.
  2. Xenophen Halbert, b. 14 Feb 1798; d. 27 Dec 1863; m. Wilhelmina "Willie" Eddins.
  3. Frances Halbert, b. 7 Feb 1800; 24 Nov1839); m. John Sitton.
  4. William Halbert, b. 22 Feb 1802; d. 25 Feb 1885; m. 10 Jan 1822, Nancy McClanahan.
  5. Arthur Clarke Halbert, b. 25 Feb 1805; d. 5 Dec 1861; m. 1) 22 Feb 1825, Pamela Arnold; 2) 2 Jan 1843, Sophia (Weaver) Crigler.
  6. Anne Halbert, b. 22 Jun 1807; d. 10 May 1837; m. 6 Apr 1823, Gabriel Nash.

John's wife Margaret died on 8 Oct 1842 in Columbus; she was 65 years old.[3] In 1850, John was living with his son Joel Halbert and family.[10]

John passed away at the age of 80, on 3 July 1854 in Columbus, Lowndes County, Mississippi and was interred in Halbert Family Cemetery, Columbus, Lowndes County, Mississippi. His will was probated on 7 Aug 1854.[11] The estate papers do not include the actual will, but Percival and Joel were the executors and after sale of personal property and payment of debts, final distribution was made as follows:

"Having this day Received of Joel Halbert and P. P. Halbert Executors of the Estate of John Halbert Dec'd a negro boy, Nthan, aged about three years Bequeathed to me, Margaret F. Halbert, wife of James Halbert, late Margaret F. Pearce. Now be it known, that we hereby, bind ourselves if the Will should be broken, or set aside or anyhing happens by which we would not be lawfully entitled to said negro, we hereby bind ourselves to return said negro to said Executors."
