Biography

John Halbert was born 11 Oct 1773 in Caroline County, Virginia. ^[1] He was a son of William Anson Halbert Sr. and Elizabeth Hill.^[2] About 1795 he married Margaret Harper.^{[citation needed]}

John and Margaret had eleven children:^[3]

John's wife Margaret died on 8 Oct 1842 in Columbus; she was 65 years old.^[3] In 1850, John was living with his son Joel Halbert and family.^[10]

John passed away at the age of 80, on 3 July 1854 in Columbus, Lowndes County, Mississippi and was interred in Halbert Family Cemetery, Columbus, Lowndes County, Mississippi. His will was probated on 7 Aug 1854.^[11] The estate papers do not include the actual will, but Percival and Joel were the executors and after sale of personal property and payment of debts, final distribution was made as follows:

Halbert, wife of James Halbert, late Margaret F. Pearce. Now be it known, that we hereby, bind ourselves if the Will should be broken, or set aside or anyhing happens by which we would not be lawfully entitled to said negro, we hereby bind ourselves to return said negro to said Executors."
