What happened to him after 1871 is a mystery to me. It’s fairly clear that he left home fairly young. I’ve tried going back to the 1881 census. There are various John Halls b. in the Manchester area - the two b. Ashton are wrong - but typically they are in working class jobs, and the Halls seemed committed to non-manual work. The nearest I can find, and it’s a long shot, is Alfred Hall b. Manchester 1856, elementary teacher, unmarried, boarding with Henry Kent’s family at 32 Citizen Rd. London (should be Hendon?) Middlesex. There were two deaths roughly consistent with this: JAH d. Kingston Sep 1888 2a 153 aged 27; or d. Marylebone Dec 1909 1a 325 aged 47.[1]
