David Johnston Hamilton, who was born on 31 August 1868 in Upper Plenty, Victoria. His parents were John Alexander Hamilton, a farmer from New South Wales, and Johanna Ryan from Kings County, Ireland (record attached). The nurse who signed David’s birth record was named Mrs. Johnston, which could be the origin of David’s middle name. David sometimes used the middle name ‘James.’

David married Elizabeth Clancy at St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church, Mansfield, on 26 October 1892. Around the time of your grandfather’s conception, David Johnston Hamilton lived at 392 Brunswick Road, which is a 40-minute walk from the hospital where your grandfather was born, showing that David Johnston Hamilton and Margaret Hynes were in the same area at this time.

David was convicted several times for attempting to raise money using valueless cheques, and received the following sentences:

On 26 January 1904, six months’ imprisonment On 6 March 1905, under the name Arthur Jamieson, six months’ imprisonment On 11 March 1905, under the name Arthur Jamieson, six months’ imprisonment On 9 March 1906, under the name John Ryan, 12 months’ imprisonment On 15 May 1906, 12 months’ imprisonment Elizabeth petitioned to divorce David in 1906 on the grounds that he did not support her, spent all his money at racecourses, and had spent several years cumulatively in prison. According to newspaper articles, the decree nisi was granted and Elizabeth was given custody of the children, but Elizabeth is still named as David’s wife in his death record, and David is named as Elizabeth’s husband in her death notice.

Over the course of his life, David worked as a farmer, a gripman at the Tramway Company, and a clerk.

David Johnston Hamilton died on 28 October 1919 at the Military Hospital in Caulfield, aged 40 years (record attached). His causes of death were nephritis (kidney inflammation), which he had been ill with for 2 years, and cardiac failure.
