The youngest son of Jacob Hancock, a Quaker industrialist, Jacob Bradshaw Hancock was born in Lisburn, Ireland in 1788. He emigrated to America, where he became connected with the public schools of Cincinnati. He married Mary Hubbard around 1830 and they had five children together. In 1844, he drowned in the Ohio River while trying to save a boy’s life.

"Thomas Hancock, superintendent of the city electric light plant of Marietta, was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, September 10, 1832. His father was Jacob Bradshaw Hancock, of Belfast, Ireland, a scholar of unusual attainments and a graduate of both Dublin and Oxford Universities. After coming to this country he became connected with the public schools of Cincinnati. In that city in 1830, he married Mary Hubbard of Westfield, Massachusetts. When Thomas was 13 years old, his father died."
Note: Jacob is not listed as an alumnus of Oxford University.

"A brother of Dr. Hancock, of Lisburn, was lately drowned in the Ohio, while humanely endeavouring to save the life of a boy who was in danger of perishing while bathing."
