Daniel Hanington was born on the 10th of April 1804 in Shediac, New Brunswick to William Hanington and Mary Darby; both loyalists in the American Revolutionary War who fled from America to Canada and among the first English settlers in Shediac. He was their thirdborn son and the sixth of thirteen children together, though his eldest sister Elizabeth died before he was born.
He was educated in Sackville and became a justice of the peace and a lieutenant colonel in the county militia. He was also a farmer, mill owner and political figure in the Province of New Brunswick, Canada.
In 1831, he married Margaret, the daughter of William Peters, a former member of the legislative assembly. Together they would have thirteen children - William, Georgina, Daniel Lionel, Thomas, Charlotte, Julia, Edward, Augustus, James, Charles, Ernest, Medley, and Walter.
He represented Westmorland County in the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick from 1834 to 1862. Hanington served for many years as the customs controller for the port of Shediac. He was speaker for the legislative assembly from March 1853 to 1856. He served as a member of the Executive Council from 1848 to 1851 and was named to the Legislative Council in 1867.
Finally he passed away on the 5th of May 1889 at the age of 84.
