Research Notes

(Notes I've collected over the years and placed in William's file. Feel free to edit or delete. Dale Hankins, Nov 24, 2017)

William and Mary Evelman, both of Monmouth County, New Jersey. They moved from New Jersey to Surry County, North Carolina and raised a large family......however, some time in the late 1770"s. they appeared to have gone back to New Jersey. We have other of their children traced also... one son in Ohio, one in Kentucky and we are working on tracing some of the other.

Military Service: Private in Revolutionary War. Server under General Marion

From Peggy Gilkey: This family starting back with William B: 1709 was in Monmouth, N.J. Thomas Hankins, the family that Debroah Eaton researches was also in Monmouth, N.J., he was born bef. 1710. A lot of researches think they were brothers, but have no documentation on this.

From Peggy Gilkey: I think all of John and Rhonda Ireland Hankins children were born in North Carolina and then the whole family left and went to Fayette Co. PA., in 178o's. John was 45. Then 4 or 5 of John's son's went to the Wilson Co. Tenn. area. This was about 1791. They were William, Samuel, Richard, Arthur and John Jr

James Hankins. B: July 24, 1780 stayed in Fayette Co. Pa.

Revision of a Hankins Family Bible Record:

In 1777., 1778 and 1779 William Hankins and his family were in Surrey and Wilkes County, North Carolina. William was on the 1777 Surrey County Tax. In 1779, he was Justice of the Peace in Surrey County. In 1780 he bought land in Surrey County. In 1781 a Surrey County road ran near his his land to meeting house. Neither the Surrey County, North Carolina index of will, the New Jersey Archives or Fayette County Pennsylvania index lists a will of William Hankins.

Other information from Surrey County, North Carolina Land Entry Book states that in 1778, Surrey County, John Martin entered land in Surrey County near Fox Nobs which included improvements whereon William Hankins was living. William Hankins entered 100 acres of land on head of James Jones Creek and waters on the North of John McMickel's line, east of John Martins entry. William Hankins also entered 300 acres along road to Fox Nob from his house and warrant was granted. William and Mary had ten children, three of who died young. William's wife Mary was still living in 1794 and named in the Knox County, Tennessee will of her son Robert Evelman Hankins.

I suggest that Hankinson-239, who is also of New Jersey is the source of the name confusion.

Hankinson-473 and Hankins-203 appear to represent the same person because: This pair appears the same. In addition, it's possible William is the Hankins mentioned as returning north in shame after failing to avenge his brother who was personally run through by Tarleton.

Also this in the G2G feed in the past couple of days: "My family were slaves on the William hankins plantation which I believe was located in Winnabow N.C. I believe it was a rice plantation. My Father met the descendants of William Hankins back in 1978 before he passed. William's brother was named Dennis, according to my Father's research. I have spoken with the Virginia set of Hankins' and there does not appear to be a relation to William and Dennis, according to their historian. My father always said that his grandfather, who was the grandson of the African, always said that William Hankins came from Scotland. I would presume Glasgow."
