Biography

Sylvania Ann Hardwick was born about 1854. She was the daughter of Robert Hardwick and Mary (Burket) Hardwick.^[1]

At the time of the 1860 Census, they were living in Union Township, Hancock County, Ohio. Her father was working there as a day laborer.^[1]

Her father joined the 57th Ohio Infantry Regiment on 25 Dec 1861. He was assigned as a Private with Company G.^[2]

There is no further record of him. It is likely he died during the war.

Her mother remarried to Jacob Haviland on 08 Apr 1866 in Putnam County, Ohio.^[3]

It is unclear where she was living at the time of the 1870 Census. She does not appear with her mother and step-father.^[4]

She married Lewis Haviland on 22 Nov 1874 in Putnam County, Ohio.^[5] Her new husband was the much younger brother of her step-father. Together they had at least the following children:^[6]

1. Eva Pearl (Haviland) Miller (10 Nov 1875 - 24 Feb 1910)
2. Orville Lemuel Haviland (02 Feb 1880)
3. John A. Haviland (04 Oct 1886)

At the time of the 1880 Census, they were living in Jennings Township, Putnam County, Ohio. Her husband was working there as a farmer.^[6]

They were still living in Jennings Township at the time of the 1900 and 1910 Censuses. Her husband continued to work as a farmer.^[7] By the time of the 1910 Census, he was retired.^[8]

At the time of the 1920 Census, she were living in Delphos, Marion Township, Allen County, Ohio. Her mother was living in her household.^[9]

She passed away on 27 Aug 1929 at the Toledo State Hospital in Toledo, Lucas County, Ohio, due to chronic myocarditis.^[10] She was buried at Walnut Grove Cemetery, Delphos, Allen County, Ohio.^[11]
