Thomas Jefferson Harpole was born on September 1, 1851 in Mississippi, United States, son of Squire Harpole (1797–1869) and Susannah Sucky Blake (1814–1877).
Thomas married Martha Jane Lewis (born on September 17, 1861 in Pickens County, Alabama; daughter of Martha (Chambley) Lewis). Their children were:
