Biography

Samuel Lemuel. Couldn't find any valid last name at birth.

Note: Notes supplied by Bernita Girdley, Indianapolis, Indiana. Author unknown. "Samuel L. Harrel was born in Greene County near Lone Tree. He was a true representive of the Spooner pioneers who have helped make the American history since the landing of the Pilgrims. With the real American patriotism, at the age of 14 years, he endeavoured to enlist in the great Civil War, but was rejected because of his extreme youth. At the age of twenty one he emigrated to DeWitt, Arkansas where he took up a homestead of forty acres of land and shortly afterward was married. He then moved from Arkansas to Indiana. His wife Laura died at Switz City and was buried in the Lebanon cemetary. The wanderlust still pursuing him he moved from Indiana to Cloud County Kansas where he resided for 17 years. In 1901 he went to Oklahoma and took up a homestead on the Cherokee Strip where he resided until his death. On his ranch he built a schoolhouse and sent for a school teacher, Ed Figel, who later became his son-in-law. Besides school, the schoolhouse was used for church services with Samuel Harrel as moderator. In other words, he made it possible to have the first community house in the Cherokee Strip or Indian territory. It was said of him that no stranger, be it Indian, halfbreed, White, Black, rich or poor was ever turned away from his door. He was the typical true American pioneer, modest, brave, cheerful, determined leader and a builder. The family tree has every reason to be proud of this man's achievement especially in the Indian Territory for his constructive and progressive assistance for the betterment of his brother man. Samuel L. Harrel has as his descendents six daughters, fifteen grand children, and eight great grandchildren. His last wife, Rhoda preceded him in death one year and six days. He passed away at the home of his youngest daughter Mrs. Dove Feigel and he and his last wife was laid to rest in the I.O.O.F. cemetary near May, Oklahoma.". Notes say this was copied from an obituary. No date.
