John was born in 1833 in Chelsea, Mass. He was the son of Jonathan Harrington and his wife Lydia.

In 1850, he lived with his family in North Chelsea.

In October 1884, he married Martha Stone.

He passed away in 1885 after less than one year of marriage. He was buried in Mount Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge, Mass.
