Martha was born in 1851 in Charlestown, Massachusetts, United States. She was the daughter of Stephen Hayden Stone (b. 1816) and Mary Ann Emerson (b. 1820). She had two brothers, Albert (b. 1845) and Charles (b. 1847).
The 1860 census shows Martha as a child living with her family in Charlestown, Massachusetts. [1] By the 1870 census, she was living with her parents in Everett, Middlesex, Massachusetts. [2] The 1880 census shows the family in the same town, with Martha working as a book-keeper. [3]
Her first husband was John Harrington in 1884. [4] He died after less than one year of marriage.
Her second husband was George Nelson Stone who was an executive in a telephone company, Cincinnati Bell. He had three daughters from his late first wife. They married in 1888. At the 1900 census, she lived at 405 Oak Avenue, Cincinnati, Ohio. [5] Mr. Stone died the following year, after which she moved to the Plaza Hotel in Manhattan.
Mrs Stone surivived the Titanic disaster in April 1912, on which she was travelling first class with her maid Amelie Icard.
Upon her death in 1924, she would bequeath a great sum of assets and personal items to Amelie. She was buried in Spring Grove Cemetery, Cincinnati, Ohio, next to her second husband.[6]
