Etheldred Harris was born in Granville County, NC, on 12 January 1749. He was the son of West Harris, Sr. and Mary Turner Harris.
Based upon a very few family records for Etheldred, we know that he married Sarah Chambliss. [this is disputed by some who have researched Ethelfred] Vondrak-7 08:11, 6 April 2016 (EDT)The names of their children are confusing. One source gives the names of his children as Jared (Jarrot), Ledbetter, Stephen, Willis and Henry. Another source names Jared, Littleton, Willis, Wiley, and adds son Hackney and daughter Elizabeth. From the 1800 and 1810 Census we know they had four sons and three daughters. We have family records to indicate the following children: (1) Jared (Jarrod) B: unknown but ca. 1785, D: unknown, M: Sally Chambliss. Children: We know he had several children, one of whom was William A. Harris, a Civil War Veteran. (2) Willis. We have no information on his marriage or family, but we know that he served as a Captain in the War of 1812. He moved to Tennessee. (3) Littleton, B: Unk, D: 9 Oct 1845, M: Temperance Williamson, Children: Nancy, Sally, or Sarah, Priscilla, Hixey, Margaret, Martha, Elisha and Gray W. Littleton Harris was a Justice for Montgomery County and a man of some prominence. (4) Wiley (Willie), B. 18 Feb 1791. D: 11 Sept 1869, M: Nancy Hancock, the daughter of Rev. John Hancock. Children: Polly, Stephen H., George W., John F. (killed in the Civil War), Austin S., Eliza, Gray W., Piety, Wiley N., Isham and Eli... When Etheldred came to Anson County in 1777, the county was unsettled due to the Revolution. His brother, West, Jr. had entered the Continental Line as a Lieutenant in 1776...Etheldred's application for pension submitted by Joshua Hurley "to the Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions Half for the County aforesaid in the town of Lawrenceville, April 16, 1834." A portion of that application reads as follows: - "and the said Joshua Hurley doth also further continue his declaration for one other tour of three months service in the Revolution, a drafted militiaman under Captian Etheldred Harris, Major West Harris and Colonial William Loftin, all of whom marched together with the said Joshua Hurley to Wilmington, North Carolina... "that he served this three months tour punctually and believes that he entered the service and served this tour about the time Cornwallis surrendered at Little York, and the reason that he said Joshua Hurley thinks so is that he was marched from Montgomery, North Carolina by way of Drowning Creek, Rockfish, Waddles Ferry on the Cape Fear River, Black River and to the Long Bridges across the Northeast River near the said Wilmington, where he remained until the British had left said town and when done, we marched then into... the town of Wilmington and received his discharge and returned home." - Joshua Hurley was not off much when he said the Fall of 1781 because Cornwallis arrived in Wilmington on 7 Apr 1781 and departed on 25 Apr 1781. He was in Wilmington for 18 days. This application for pension gave ...additional information about Capt. Etheldred Harris who marched with his brother Maj. West Harris, Jr., along with Joshua Hurley and others to Wilmington, NC, in 1781. Maj. West Harris was in the Continental Line and Capt. Etheldred Harris was in the State Militia... In the Book, Historical Register of Officers of the Continental Army, By: Francis B. Heitman, only Officers of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd North Carolina Regiments are listed with the following note at the top of page 45: "The records of the North Carolina Regiments are very meager, owing no doubt to the constant and arduous campaigns in the Carolinas, Georgia and Virginia, in which the Regiments participated, with frequent loss of all their baggage and records." Neither West nor Etheldred were listed with any of the three Regiments. Etheldred and West both survived the War with no ill effects. Etheldred farmed and raised his family. They were evidently people who believed in God and went to Church meetings. Bishop Francis Asbury traveled up and down the Colonies, spreading the word of God and establishing "Societies" to contribute to spread of Methodism. An entry in his Journal for Friday, 7 Dec 1804 reads: "On Friday I rode eight miles to breakfast with Etheldred Harris, and came on 18 miles to John Randles."... An old Montgomery County Deed dated 19 August 1806, made available to us by Mr. Frank Coggins, indicated that Arthur Harris and his wife, Mary Myrick Harris, gave two acres of land to Henry Ledbetter, Etheldred Harris, Ebenezer Hearn, John Hancock, William Taylor, Joseph Hall, Thos. Hearn and James Smith, Trustees, "that they shall erect and build - a house or place of Worship for the use of the members of Methodist Espiscopal Church in the United States of America according to the rules and discipline which from time to time may be agreed upon - ." The name of Etheldred Harris, as a Trustee ... John Hancock's daughter, Nancy, later married Wiley (Willie), the son of Etheldred Harris. Edith, the daughter of the Rev. Henry Ledbetter, was the wife of West Harris, Jr. Eli Harris, a son of Arthur Harris, apparently sold a five hundred acre tract of land to J. M. Worth and on 27 March 1844 obtained a Quit Claim Deed from Mr. Worth to protect the property "on which Center Meeting House now stands - ." From these two Deeds we learn that Arthur and Mary Harris gave the land on which Center Church was built. " ... Arthur Harris was a brother of Etheldred and West Harris, Jr.... Sources: 1.
