Ellen Harrison was christened on 25 Jan 1837 at the church of St Mary the Virgin in Prescot, Lancashire. She was the daughter of Thomas and Sarah Harrison. Her father's occupation was recorded as collier, and the family's address as Prescot.

By June 6th 1841, the family were living in Springfield Row, Eccleston. Thomas was a labourer.

By March 30th 1851, they were still in Springfield Row. Thomas was a farm labourer, as was his stepson Joseph Upton. Ellen was a glass smoother; the younger children were scholars.

Ellen married William Hughes on 18 Sep 1854 at St Thomas' Church in Eccleston, Lancashire. Neither had been married before, and both lived in Eccleston; William was 23 and a miner, Ellen was 18. Their fathers were named as Joseph Hughes (miner) and Thomas Harrison (miner). The witnesses were Peter Thomason and Esther Twist.

On the night of April 7th 1861, Ellen was with her parents in Springfield Row. She was married, not widowed, but her husband wasn't in the household; she was employed as a glass smoother. Her father was a labourer. Ellen's six-month-old daughter Elizabeth Ellen was also in the household.
