Biography

Elizabeth's origins are unknown as is her surname. Torrey in "New England Marriages to 1700" said that her name MIGHT have been Welbourne but he does not assert it so her last name at birth should technically be "Unknown". The complete entry including his sources is this:

ORVIS, George (-1664) & Elizabeth (WELBOURNE)? [CARPENTER], w David, m/3 Richard BRONSON aft 27 Apr 1664; ca 1661; Farmington, CT {Frame-Dana 197; Reg. 12:34; Bronson 11; Orvis 12; Sv. 1:336; Carpenter (1901) 6; Hartford Prob. 1:223, 414}[1]

Having reviewed all sources cited by Torrey, none of them assert a surname or origin for Elizabeth so where Torrey got Welbourne is unknown. That was the surname of the first wife of Richard Brownson but there is no reason to believe it was the surname of Elizabeth.

However, in his entry for her marriage to David Carpenter Torrey asserts no surname at all:

CARPENTER, David (-1651?) & Elizabeth ____ (-1694), m/2 George ORVIS, m/3 Richard BRONSON; by 1644; Farmington, CT {Carpenter (1901) 6; Bronson 11; Orvis 12; Hartford Prob. 1:113, 228, 414; Frame-Dana 197; Reg. 11:326}[2]

Birth date is estimated as 1625 based on her first marriage to David Carpenter in 1644 following WikiTree standards of about 20 years of age for a female at first marriage.

Name Issue: Some believe her name was Weyborn and her father was John Weyborn but no source has been identified to confirm this.

David vs. William Carpenter: There was a William Carpenter born in 1628 who arrived in New England in 1638 with wife Abigail age 38 plus three children but this must be a different person since the ages of the children are not aligned.

The Carpenter and Orvis children of Elizabeth appear in NEHGR 12:34 "Church Records of Farmington in Connecticut"[3]

Elizabeth and David had four children:

  1. Elizabeth (1644-aft.1694) married Richard Jones, then John Chappell, then Ebenezer? Hill
  2. Mary (1646-1650)
  3. David Carpenter (1647-1700), in 1670 married Sarah Hough, dau of William Hough (1619 Chester, Cheshire, England - 1683 New London, CT) and Sarah Calkins (6 May 1627 Waverton, Cheshire, England - 16 Oct 1683 New London, CT) and had five children.
  4. Mary (1650-1710) on 16 Jun 1672 married (1) Joseph HIckok (1645-1687) in 1672 and (2) Samuel Hinman in 1689

David died in Connecticut 22 Jan 1650 (double year not stated in Barbour Collection)[4] His will was written 20 Jan 1650, inventory taken 18 May 1652.[5]

Inventory taken 18 May, 1652. The last Will & Testament of David Carpenter, late of Farmington, Decd: I give to my wife Elizabeth the Celler that I live in and all my Household Stuff and half my Estate abroad. And I give to my children, Elizabeth, David and Mary, the other half of my Estate abroad, viz., all besides the Celler and Household Stuff. Adms. to John White.

In 1652 at Farmington, Connecticut Elizabeth married (2) George Orvis. She was identified as Elizabeth (MAYBE Welbourne) the widow of David Carpenter[1] George and Elizabeth had six children:

  1. Samuel, b. May 1653 in Farmington married Deborah ___ abt 1680.
  2. Hannah, b. Apr. 1655 in Farmington married John Orton in 1687, died 11 Nov 1694
  3. Roger, b. June 1657 Farmington married Merriam Hannison on 15 Dec 1692, lived in Farmington and was a soldier in King Philip's War. Died 14 Jan 1736/7.
  4. Ebenezer, Feb. 1660
  5. Margaret Orvis (Jun 1661 Farmington, CT - 1748 Farmington, CT), in 1681 married Jonathan Hough son of William Hough and Sarah Caulkins.
  6. Mary, b. June 1663 married Samuel Scott in Feb 1686/7 in Farmington and had 4 ch. She died on 28 Nov 1748.

George died before 27 Apr 1664 when the inventory of his estate was taken.[6] His will left his estate to Elizabeth to bring up the younger children.[7]

After his death, Elizabeth married (3) Richard Bronson[1] (also spelled Brownson and Brunson) as her third husband. Richard was a carpenter and farmer. He was a widower with several children when he married Elizabeth. Richard's first wife is listed as Abigail Wilbourne in "New England Marriages to 1700".[8] Relationship of Abigail to Elizabeth (maybe) Welbourne is unknown.

No known children from her marriage to Richard.

Richard Bronson/Brownson's will is dated 2 May 1685. Probate record is dated 1687 filed in Hartford, Connecticut.[9]

Elizabeth died in April 1694 between the writing of her will (April 6) and taking of inventory (April 26).

What proof do we have that Elizabeth was born in England? Is there a record of her crossing the ocean? The profile for her first husband says he was born in Hartford. It doesn't seem likely that she came over here as a married woman if he was born in Hartford.

Have we checked the records of Hartford and Farmington for a daughter named Elizabeth about her age? They were married in 1643. If, as I suspect, she wasn't married in England, there should be church records somewhere in Connecticut.

Orvis-530 and Weyborn-3 appear to represent the same person because: Multiple duplicate generations of the Brownson family were created without source by a user who is not pre-1700 certified. This is a cleanup merge, one of many so please do not reject it on the basis of mismatching birth dates as the original user was not able to enter pre-1700 dates. Data and bio from the target (previously existing) profile should be retained. Please contact me (Stauf-1) if you have any questions.

Likely duplicate of Elizabeth Weyborn-3 (who married Orvis; Orvis was not her LNAB) and part of a chain of duplicates created for this family. If submitting a merge or edit please work on these records as a group to prevent stragglers. Thank you.

Unknown-455509 and Weyborn-3 appear to represent the same person because: Same birth year, same husbands, this is same person.

Uploaded record showing George Orvis marriage that recorded his wife as "Elizabeth {Welbourne?} Carpenter". This is the only record found with her name and this was the original name on this profile before someone changed it to Weyborn. If someone has a primary source that shows that the wife of George Carpenter was the daughter of John and Margaret Weyborn of Kent, England, please provide it.

Thanks

This profile has several prior mergers and changes. She was initially listed as Elizabeth Welbourne with no identified parents. A merger was then made with the Elizabeth Weyborn profile which added unsourced Weyborn parents. As mentioned in the bio, Elizabeth has no identified birth date or parents. Someone added her unsourced parents who I believe should be delinked.

Since you removed the Harrison name that did not match the weyborn profile, the Harrison name should be removed from the biography text area, also. Could the merge then proceed since the rest of this profile matches all the marriages in the other profile?
I found a source for Elizabeth Harrison, daughter of Richard Harrison of New Haven. However, Elizabeth, d. of Richard Harrison, married Henry Lynn, then John Lamson, and finally John Morris; no mention of David Carpenter. I am detaching Richard Harrison (& wife) from this profile.

Harrison-15044 and Weyborn-3 are not ready to be merged because: I will research the Harrison connection further, and willing to detach from parents if cannot find any sources. However, I would not be willing to merge into another profile with an unsourced father. During this time, please try to source the father you have listed, and no source can be found for either father, perhaps we should agree to merge without parents attached. Thank you.

Elizabeth Harrison?

Harrison-15044 and Weyborn-3 appear to represent the same person because: Weyborn-3 has a lot of sources and documentation. Harrison-15044 has no source on where the Harrison name came from

Everything else is same, same husbands in bio

Unfortunately, just discovered one more duplicate orphan profile listed as Elizabeth Carpenter as wife of George Orvis. Merged with no change to the data.

Marriage record to George Orvis identifies her as Elizabeth "Welbourne". No source identified for Elizabeth Weyborn as the person who married David Carpenter, George Orvis and Richard Brownson/Bronson
