Biography

Samuel Otoo Hassall was born on 13th May 1796 at Coventry, Warwickshire, England. He was the second son of Rowland Hassall and Elizabeth Hancox. Samuel travelled to Tahiti with his parents and older brother as his parents commenced Christian mission work there. Another brother was born whilst in Tahiti. The family then evacuated to New South Wales in 1799, where they settled in the Parramatta region.

Samuel married Lucy Mileham on 22nd November 1819 in St John's Church of England, Parramatta.[1][2]

He passed away, aged just 34 years, on 25th July 1830 at Cobbitty, New South Wales.[3]

The Hassall Family History Association invites all descendants of Rowland and Elizabeth Hassall to a reunion marking 225 years of the family in Australia. The four-day program, May 5th-8th 2023, includes:

• An opening reception with the Mayor of Parramatta (May 5th) • a full day at the Thomas Hassall Anglican College at Middleton Grange (May 6th), • an historical walk through Parramatta, St John’s Cemetery, and a service at St John’s Cathedral (May 7th), • visits to Hassall heritage sites in Camden, Windsor and O’Connell Plains (May 5th & 8th). • The pageant “The Triple Wedding”, which introduces you to all of Rowland and Elizabeth’s 8 children. • keynote addresses on the significance of the Hassall heritage, plus • opportunities to learn more about genealogy and family research.
