Isaac Hatfield was born about 1665-1667 at New Haven, Connecticut[1]. He was the child of Matthias Hatfield and Maria Mariken Melyn.
His actual date and place of birth are uncertain. Abraham Hatsfield states that he was born in 1667.[2] His parents were married in New Haven in 1664. His father Matthias was established as a founding Associate (freeholder) in Elizabethtown, NJ, in 1666. Three of the Hatfield children, but not Isaac, were baptized in New York City in 1669, 1670 and 1674. The family settled in Elizabethtown in or after 1666. They might have remained in New Haven or New York while a homestead was being prepared. Isaac could have been born in New Haven, New York or New Jersey.
Isaac was himself an Elizabethtown Associate by 1695.[3]
Death: He was living in Nov. 1710 when he recorded land sales to his three sons.[2] He was deceased by 1717: "John Indes . . . was living in 1717, near Winan's Landing, on the Creek, and just beyond Isaac Hatfield, decd."[3]
Note: The death date of 1709 sometimes referenced is evidently based on a Barbour Collection entry listing Isaac Hatfield as son of John Hatfield from records of Hartford, CT.[4] A full date of 25 Oct. is posted on Findagrave, without source. In fact there is no reason to suppose that our Isaac and his family were ever in Hartford. In Barbour, John is said to be an original settler of Elizabethtown, NJ. But there was no John Hatfield among the early settlers of Elizabethtown, and the father of Isaac of Elizabethtown was Mathias. John and Isaac are said to be ancestors of Edwin F. Hatfield, "of New York in 1855", presumably the author of the History of Elizabeth.[3] Our Isaac was indeed an ancestor of Edwin,[5] but the lineage from John and death in 1709 are erroneous.
Isaac died about October 1709. [See "Death" and "Note", above.]
When Isaac was born, circa 1667, in either New Haven or New Amsterdam, his father, Matthias, was 37 and his mother, Maria, was 30. He had at least two sons. He died on October 25, 1709, at the age of 42 in Elizabethtown, Essex, Province of East Jersey.
