The birth of Mary Jane Havill is registered as "Jane Mary Havill" in St. Thomas, Devon in 1841. ^[1] She was christened Mary Jane, the daughter of George and Jane Havill on the 26th January 1841 in the parish of St. Thomas, Heavitree. (George Havill's occupation is recorded as "Butcher")

In the census lists of Heavitree, Devon, she appears with her family as Mary in 1841, Mary J. in 1851 and Mary Jane in 1861.

She married William Marchant in Islington, London in 1861^[2]
