Biography

Descendant
Descendant of William Taylor, a Revolutionary War Patriot.

James Hawkins was born about 1797 in North Carolina, son of Pvt Benjamin Hawkins Sr (1757 - 1827) and Mary (Taylor) Hawkins (~1760 - 1848). In Ancestry family trees, he is unfortunately confused with James Hawkins of Jersey County, Illinois who was married to

His siblings were:

  1. Sarah Ann Hawkins (~1780 - ~1860)
  2. Nancy (Hawkins) Templeton (~1783 - ~1825)
  3. Blanche (Hawkins) Campbell (~1784 - <1850)
  4. Joseph Hawkins (~1785 - <1870)
  5. John Hawkins (~1790 - <1869)
  6. Polly Hawkins (~1790 - <1850)
  7. William H. Hawkins Sr. (~1793 - ~1850)
  8. Benjamin Hawkins Jr. (~1796 - <1860)
  9. Raleigh Hawkins (1800 - 1882)

James died about 1864 in Sebastion County, Arkansas aged ~67.

Per family records of John May and Charity Taylor, James married their daughter Mary May (1801-1870). James' mother-in-law, Charity, was a cousin of his mother Mary Taylor Hawkins. In the 1840 census there is a female in 80-89 age range who appears to be James' mother-in-law Charity. There is a note attached to John May's pension application which states James Hawkins, 47, of Polk County, TN, applied for the service pension of his father-in-law John May who died on 28 December 1839, leaving a widow "Charoty" May who died on 28 December 1844. The notes name the surviving children of John and Charity, stating John and Charity had married in Henry County (meaning Henry County, VA).

James was listed as an estate co-executor in the December 1827 will of his father Benjamin Hawkins. In the will Benjamin stated one of the children was to take care of his wife Mary and daughter Polly.

Based on the 1830 census for McMinn County, it appears James took his mother Mary (Taylor) Hawkins and his sister Polly in. In his household there is a female in the 40-50 age bracket who could be Polly, and a female in the 70-80 age bracket who was likely his mother Mary. Since Mary later married "old man Dodson" then Mary and Polly could have in a different household in the 1840 census.

By the time of the 1840 census, James and his wife and children had moved to Polk County, TN. The 1840 census shows James and his wife with 3 girls, 3 boys, an elderly woman (age 80-89), and 11 enslaved people.

The 1850 District 1, Polk County, Tennessee census shows that James was born in 1797 in NC, and his wife was named Mary. Five children appeared in the 1850 census ranging from ages 4 to 20. Their names were John B Hawkins; S W N Hawkins (believed to be James Owen); Sarah E Hawkins; William Hawkins; and Emily Hawkins.

James and Mary moved to Bates, Sebastion County, AR by the time of the 1860 census. The census showed five children, Onese (Owen), Sarah, William, Nancy and Emily, and an 18-year-old named Richard Macentush. A separate 1860 record referred to as a "slave schedule" showed James had four enslaved people.

James' wife Mary shows up in the1870 census for Bates, Sebastian, Arkansas living with her daughter Emily and Emily's husband James McNatt. Her husband James Hawkins does not appear in the 1870 census which suggests that he died between 1860 and 1870, probably in Sebastian County, AR.

Based on census records, the children of James and Mary were:

  • Unknown Daughter Hawkins, 1829–
  • Unknown Daughter Hawkins, 1830–
  • John B. Hawkins,1830–
  • James Owen Hawkins, 1833–1924

  • William Hawkins, 1839–
  • Nancy M. Hawkins, 1843–1913
