Charles dit Emmanuel or Manuel, was born at Port Royal on January 22, 1706, the oldest son of Jean Emmanuel and Madeleine Dugas. He married Marie Claire Daigre, daughter of Bernard Daigre and Marie Claire Bourg, perhaps at Minas, in 1729 and settled at L'Assomption, Pisiguit, Nova Scotia. They had seven children between 1731 and 1744, six sons and a daughter. Around 1750, to escape the British he moved his family to Ile-St-Jean, where he was counted by a French official as Charles Emmanuel (for inexplicable reasons sometimes Emmanuel served as his surname) in 1752 at St-Pierre-du-Nord on the island's north shore. Nevertheless, in late 1758 the British deported Charles, Claire and most of their unmarried children to St-Malo aboard the transport "Violet," which sank in a storm off the coast of southwest England during the second week of December. All aboard the vessel perished. Charles' daughter Marie, who evidently crossed on a different vessel married into the Haché dit Gallant family at Cherbourg in January 1761.

Two of Charles' sons also crossed on a different vessel and lived to tell about it. One of the two was Jean-Baptiste, who later died in France while in exile. However his wife and surviving children made it to New Orleans in 1785, aboard the vessel "La Bergere." From there they moved upriver and settled on the banks of Bayou Lafourche just below Donaldsonville, where they were given land by the Spanish colonial government.
