Biography

Elizabeth HEMPSTEAD PLUMBE was born to Joshua and Elizabeth Larrabee Hempstead on Christmas Eve, 1672. She died 19 Sept 1733, less and one year after her husband John Plumbe.

Claims by LAMB family descendants that Elizabeth Hempstead (daughter of Joshua & Elizabeth Larrabee Hempstead, 25 Dec 1672-19 Sept 1733) married their ancestor Isaac are unworthy of consideration, as they are speculative, long dismissed by serious researchers, and not supported by any historical record.

B. (Entries) Saturday, 28 Oct 1732: "Brother Jno Plumb died with a violent Cold...I was Called up at 3 Clock to go to Brother Plumbs & I found him a Dying...I Stayed after I help lay him out..."

Sun day, 29 Nov 1732: "Brother Plumb was buried after meeting."

Diary Entry, Friday, 19 Sept 1733: "I set up Last Night with Sister Eliz Plumb. She was all night a Dying. She Dyed this morn about 7 o the Clock; 60 year old Last Christmas Eve."

Thursday, 20 Sept 1733: "I was att the funeral of Sister Plumb."

On the death of John Plumbe's Mother, Elizabeth Green Plumbe - Saturday, 18 Nov 1721: "Aunt Plumb died."

Paying a visit to Amy Plumbe, wife of Joshua Plumb (son of John & Elizabeth) - Monday, 6 Aug 1750: "In the aftern I went to...See Cuzn amy Plumb..."

On the death of Hannah Harris Plumbe, wife of John, son of John and Elizabeth - Wednesday, 5 Oct 1757: "Hannah Plumb wife of my Nephew John Plumb Died 50 0dd."

On the death of Peter Plumbe, his nephew, son of John and Elizabeth Hempstead Plumbe - Wednesday, 1 February 1748/49: "Peter Plumbe my Eldest Sisters youngest Son aged about 48 was taken yesterday...I called to see him, he Expired about 2 clock morn..."

Joshua Hempstead makes 1 incidental reference to Isaac Lamb in the 12 years his DIARY overlaps Isaac's life; he does not mention Isaac as a "Brother," or Isaac's wife as his "Sister" Elizabeth, and he does not mention Isaac Lamb's death or burial in the DIARY, even though he is meticulous over the 47 years of his journal to mention death's and funeral/burials of aquaintances in New London County.

V. Groton, Connecticut, Book of Deeds (4 1/2 years after the death of Elizabeth Hempstead Plumbe)

“ This settlement of bounds made and executed by and between Jacob Lamb of Groton Farmer & Daniel Lamb of the same farmer where we now dwell is as follows … true dividing bounds & lines between our adjoining lands … lying to the eastward of the brook which the sd Daniel hath sold to Deacon Collver and is to be excluded out of this settlement … Dated 21 Nov 1737 … recd 28 Feb 1737/8. Signed Jacob Lamb, Daniel Lamb … wit: Humphrey Avery, Elisabeth E. Lamb her mark.”

Lamb, is transacted 4 1/2 years after the death of Elizabeth Hempstead Plumbe, widow of John Plumbe, sister of Joshua Hempstead, the New London Diarist, and daughter of Joshua and Elizabeth Larrabee Hempstead)

" Its (THE DIARY OF JOSHUA HEMPSTEAD) author was a remarkable man - one that might serve to represent, or at least illustrate, the age, country, and society in which he lived…….As the Hempstead descendants are numerous, and this publication should have an especial attraction to them, a genealogy of the immediate families of Robert, Joshua, and Joshua Hempstead, 2d is given...Joshua Hempstead, married Elizabeth Larrabee. An indirect yet powerful proof of relationship is provided in the fact that when Mary Hempstead Plumbe (wife of Greene Plumbe, John Esquire's younger brother) dies, in her will she names John Plumbe (III), her nephew, son of John and Elizabeth Hempstead Plumbe, (born 1692) as her executor.

" Joshua Hempstead, married Elizabeth Larrabee. He died 1687.” Under children of this couple was listed Joshua Hempstead, 2d, the author of the Hempstead Diary and listed as the oldest child was “Elizabeth, b. September 2, 1672, m. John Plumb, 1689, died 1733.” The New London Town records also record, "1688/9 February 13- John Plumb & Elizabeth Hempstead were married..," which further confirms Elizabeth Hempstead married John Plumb.
