Biography

Elizabeth HEMPSTEAD PLUMBE was born to Joshua and Elizabeth Larrabee Hempstead on Christmas Eve, 1672. She died 19 Sept 1733, less and one year after her husband John Plumbe.

Claims by LAMB family descendants that Elizabeth Hempstead (daughter of Joshua & Elizabeth Larrabee Hempstead, 25 Dec 1672-19 Sept 1733) married their ancestor Isaac are unworthy of consideration, as they are speculative, long dismissed by serious researchers, and not supported by any historical record.

Joshua Hempstead makes 1 incidental reference to Isaac Lamb in the 12 years his DIARY overlaps Isaac's life; he does not mention Isaac as a "Brother," or Isaac's wife as his "Sister" Elizabeth, and he does not mention Isaac Lamb's death or burial in the DIARY, even though he is meticulous over the 47 years of his journal to mention death's and funeral/burials of aquaintances in New London County.

(please note, the above record from the Groton Book of Deeds, signed by the widow of Isaac Lamb, Elizabeth E. Lamb, is transacted 4 1/2 years after the death of Elizabeth Hempstead Plumbe, widow of John Plumbe, sister of Joshua Hempstead, the New London Diarist, and daughter of Joshua and Elizabeth Larrabee Hempstead)

VI. HISTORY OF NEW LONDON, CONNECTICUT, From the first Survey of the Coast in 1612-1860, by Frances Manwaring Caulkins

" Its (THE DIARY OF JOSHUA HEMPSTEAD) author was a remarkable man - one that might serve to represent, or at least illustrate, the age, country, and society in which he lived…….As the Hempstead descendants are numerous, and this publication should have an especial attraction to them, a genealogy of the immediate families of Robert, Joshua, and Joshua Hempstead, 2d is given...Joshua Hempstead, married Elizabeth Larrabee. He died 1687.” (Under children of this couple) “Elizabeth, b. September 2, 1672, m. John Plumb, 1689, died 1733.”

A New London Historian comments on the purported connection between the New London HEMPSTEADS and LAMBS: "It is very frustrating when someone hijacks some poor ancestor who can't even defend him/herself. There is far too much of that around...Having said that, I don't know what more you can do than you are already doing. I Googled "Elizabeth Lamb" and checked a couple of sites. Found one where you (or someone else) had posted your information, but I can't say it seemed to make any difference to the other (mis) information on the site. Probably the only time these things make an impression is when someone wants to use the info to get into the DAR or Mayflower Society, which is not the case here.

I can add that Hempstead says when noting the death of "Sister Eliz Plumb" that she was "60 year old Last Christmas Eve," making her obviously the Eliz. H born 12/24/1672. The idea that she was married at 14 (and then divorced within two years) is clearly ludicrous. Given the way dates were done then, with the year starting Mar. 25, it may actually have been 1690 when she was married, making her 17, which is more reasonable. Anyway, other than commiserate, there's not much I can suggest. If someone came into the [Shaw] Mansion [home of the NLCHS] with a Lamb genealogy we could correct it, but short of that."

These are two profiles representing the same person, and the two should be merged. The profile managers should collaborate on which spouse is correct, and detach the other.
