1. From the New Jersey will of Peter Hendershot, written 27 Apr 1837. Probate 30 Jun 1837, Named in the will are: Wife, Sophia Elizabeth; brother, John (J? or I?) Hendershot and his wife, Phebe; brother, Abraham Hendershot; sister, Catharine Arvis, wife of Jacob Arvis; sister, Mary Smith; nephew, Peter Dennis who was likely the brother of Isaac Dennis also named in the will; 3 sons of his brother, Jacob Dennis; Sophia Roe, wife of David Roe who was likely Sophia Dennis, a possible sister to Isaac and Peter, plus several others whose relationships have not yet been determined. (No children are named in this will which strongly suggests that Peter and Sophia Elizabeth Hendershot had no children) It is believed that Peter Dennis is actually the nephew of Peter's wife, Sophia. Sophia was the sister of Barbary Lantz who married John Dennis and they definitely had a son, Isaac Dennis (named in the will). Isaac Dennis married Sophia Hendershot who is the daughter of Peter's brother, John J Hendershot. The following extract which concerns John J Hendershot is copied from the will. For consistency, I used the middle initial J, but it was impossible to tell if it was J or I in the hand written will. 5. I give devise and bequeath to John J Hendershot, my brother, all sum or sums of money that he may owe me at the time of my death and all sums that may grow due to my estate for rent after my death. And for further provision for my said brother John J Hendershot, I give devise and bequeath to my executor herein after named or the survivor of them, all that farm and plantation that formerly belonged to the said John J Hendershot containing about ninety acres in trust for the following uses and purposes – viz for the purposes of suffering and permitting the said John J Hendershot to use occupy and enjoy the said farm for and during the natural life of the said John J Hendershot and after the death of the said John J Hendershot if he should die first then to suffer and permit Phebe the wife of the said John J Hendershot to use occupy and enjoy the said farm during her widowhood – but if at any time the said Phebe wife of the said John should marry after the death of the said John then the permission for her to use the said farm shall cease and be void and she take no benefit from the bequeath to my said executors and it is expressly understood that my said executors are to require that the said John J Hendershot or in case of his death of the said Phebe the wife of the said John that he or she build upon the said premises within the term of three years from my death a small comfortable dwelling house the cost of which may not exceed five hundred dollars, in consideration of the use and enjoyment of the said farm and in case the said John J Hendershot or his wife shall fail to build such house as above directed within the time aforesaid then my executors hereafter named are authorized and required to build the same and the cost thereof is to be deducted from the rents of the said farm and if there is not sufficient then when the said farm is sold as is hereafter directed, the balance of the principal and interest for building the same is to be deducted from the proceeds of the sale of the said farm. 6. After the death of the said John J Hendershot and after the death or marriage of the said Phebe the wife of the said John – I order and direct my executors herein after named to sell and dispose of all that farm and plantation that formerly belonged to the said John J Hendershot and which is devised in trust to my said executors and the proceeds thereof after deducting the expenses of the sale and whatever of principal and the interest thereon my said executors may have had to expend in the building a house on the said farm (which house is not to cost more than five hundred dollars) I give, devise, and bequeath the one half part thereof to the children of the said John J Hendershot, that may be living at the time the use of the said John and his wife may be determined, and the other half part thereof to the children of Abraham Hendershot that may be living at the time of my death to be paid to such children or their proper representative as soon as conveniently can be after such sale. 7th I give devise and bequeath to Peter Hendershot Junr the son of John J Hendershot and to Isaac Dennis the lot of land adjoining to the farm formerly belonging to John J Hendershot and which was set off to me in the decision of my father’s estate containing about forty five acres more or less, to be equally divided between them according to the quality thereof to them, their heirs and assigns forever as tenants in common.

2. From the book "The History of Sussex and Warren Co's by James P Snell", written in 1881, p 459. My edition is a reprint from 1981. This extract supports that the Peter Hendershot whose will was cited above had the same siblings named in the will. Jacob Hendershot married Miss Effie Paugh, and resided in the old township of Newton (now Hampton), near the village of Newton. He was quite a large real-estate owner. His children were Peter; John; Jacob; Abraham; Isaac; Elizabeth, wife of Nathaniel Ayers; Effie, wife of Daniel Predmore; Mary, wife of James Smith; and Catharine, wife of Jacob Arvis.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:
