Biography

Martha Henderson was the daughter of William Henderson, of Augusta VA.

There are two deeds in Augusta that mention Robert and Martha Finley:

Page 643.--16th May, 1758. Robert ( ) Finley and Martha ( ) to William Finley, £20, 100 acres on South River Shanandore, part of the land on which Robert now lives, and joining south side, John Ramsey's land; corner between William and Robert Finley; corner Charles Dalhoss; corner William's old survey. Delivered: Robert Finley, son of Wm. Finley, 13th April, 1798.

Page 94.--18th November, 1766. [??] Robert ( ) Finley, gent., and Martha to John Ramsey, £65, 88 acres in Beverley Manor on both side South River of Shanando, William Finley's line. Delivered: William Ramsey, 5th October, 1772.

in 1770 Martha's father's will included a provision for "Shusanna Finley, daughter to daughter Martha".

Research Note

There were various Finley's of similar names in early Augusta County. "We Relate", which generally has excellent research on Augusta, has Martha Henderson married to Robert Finley, who died in 1763 and whose brother James admined his estate.[1] However, if that Robert died in 1763 he could not have been the Robert who sold land with wife, Martha, in 1766. Also the Robert Finley married to Martha Henderson had at least one daughter, mentioned in William Henderson's will, whereas the Robert who died in 1763 left his brother as "heir at law". Martha's husband also could not be the Robert Finley who was baptized in 1745, as they were married at least by 1758. Therefore, Martha's husband must have been a Robert Finley separate from those other two.

Data for this Martha Henderson and her husband Robert Finley has been shfited around in the past due a high-risk assumption that a 1791 John Finley will with multiple and altered copies for some reason, might be a reliable primary source. However, since the will has appeared in multiple versions with altered text, it should probably not be considered a reliable source -- and has indeed caused multiple conflation an confusion. Problems further complicated by children in the will named after aunts and uncles and living near the same location.

Something is not right with these parents. Mother has a birthplace of 1702 in Knox County, TN, which is impossible since no white people lived there until about 1785. A Susan Gillespie married a William Henderson in Knox County, TN in 1794.
