John shifted with the family to Cleve in 1885, riding horseback with his brother, taking the loose horses and stock. He became a blacksmith like his father, and farmed the original property his father purchased, continuing on that place until it was sold in 1905. John then purchased Sec 50 Hundred of Yadnarie, where he built a new home for his family. By 1926 they had purchased 6,000 acres west of Cleve and some further property near Arno Bay. John sold part of his land to son-in-law Joe Brooks and with Peter and Jack, continued to farm the reduced holding, while Vic and Basil worked the Arno Bay farm.
