Biography

Bertran was born in New York to parents Sidney Hendrickson and Julia ?.

In 1900 the family was living in Scarsdale, Westchester, NY. There were five children and Bertram's mother, Julia in the home. There was also a boarder.[1]

Bertram registered for the World War l draft in 1916 when he was twenty four. He listed his occupation as a scientist in soil survey working for the Bureau of Soils in the US Department of Agriculture and living in Washington, DC. His physical description was of a 5'10" man of stout build with brown hair and blue eyes. He registered in Sargent County, North Dakota. [2]

He was inducted at St. Paul, MN on 12 Oct 1917 and was sent to Camp Dodge Iowa. He served in Headquarters Co, 312th Engineers until discharge in June 1919. He was assigned overseas from Aug 1918 to June 1919. He was discharged at Mitchel Field, L.I. as a Master Engineer, Senior Grade.

In 1920, Bertram and his first wife were enumerated living as boarders with the South family in Natchitoches, Natchitoches, Louisiana where he was working as a surveyor.[3] note: wife 26 y, born in LA, both parents also fr LA

In 1934, Bertram was living in Tyler, Texas with his family. He is listed in the US City Directory as the Superintendent for the US Department of Agriculture Soil Erosion Experimental Station. [4].

Bertram's wife Evelyn died in 1938. They had two children.

Bertram married Laura McElreath in 1939 and was living with Laura and his two children in Athens, Clarke, Georgia when the 1940 US census was done.[5]

Bertram died in April 1983 at 90 years old in Clarke County, Georgia.
