According to Foster (1874) and Dugdale (1901), Elizabeth de Hertlington,[1] is the daughter and co-heir of William de Hertlington, esq. (d. c. 1466/73). Foster (1874), claims that Wm Hertlington d. 1466, but Harker (1869), states that he died around 1473, and also claims that it was the heiress of Henry de Hertlington who passed the Hartlington estate to the Metcalfes. He was the last of an ancient and knightly family, and derived his name from Hartlington, now in Craven, North Yorkshire.[2][3]
The Hertlingtons were an ancient family of Clifford tenants, who were bailiffs of Kettlewelldale.[4]
Marriage
She married Thomas Metcalfe of Nappa (1424-1504), Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster.
According to Dugdale (1901), they had five children.[2]Foster (1874), adds 2 more unknown daughters in his construction, and names spouses that Dugdale (1901), does not. The two researchers also disagree as to the order of sons. Speight (1900), departs from them altogether and asserts that Ottiwell was their eldest son.[5]
Combined construction of children listed by Dugdale (1901) and Foster (1874):[6]
Ottiwell (a.k.a. Oswell or Ottwell) of Swinithwaite (d.v.p. 1500).[7]
