James Hewit was born in about 1796 in Eccleston, Lancashire. He was probably born on 23 Nov 1796 and christened on 11 Dec 1796 at the church of St Mary the Virgin in Prescot, Lancashire, the illegitimate son of Mary Hewit of Prescot.
James married Mary Arnold on 18 Sep 1820 at St Helens Chapel of Ease in the parish of Prescot, Lancashire, by licence. Both were of the local parish. The witnesses were Margaret Arrowsmith and Thomas Simcock.
Their son Henry was born in about 1821 in Lancashire.
Their daughter Elizabeth was born in about 1823 in Lancashire.
Their son William was born in about 1826 in Lancashire.
Their son Thomas was born in about 1836 in Lancashire.
Their son John was born in about 1840, probably in Eccleston, Lancashire.[1]
By June 6th 1841, the family was living in Eccleston Hill, Eccleston. James was an agricultural labourer, as were the two sons old enough to work, Henry and William.
Mary's death was registered in either the last quarter of 1844[2] or the first quarter of 1845;[3] in either case her age was recorded as 49.
By March 30th 1851, James was living on his own in Gyllers Green, Eccleston. He was still an agricultural labourer.
By April 7th 1861, James was living in the household of George and Ellen Huyton, in the Engine pub in Havannah, Parr. As well as running the pub, George had an 11-acre farm, and James appears to have been the one man he employed to help work the farm.
James died in 1863, and was buried on 11 Feb 1863 in St Helens Cemetery. His age was recorded as 69.
Research Notes
The christenings of Mary (1834), James (1838) and James (1840), children of James Hewitt labourer of Prescot and his wife Mary are probably a different family, because the last James was registered at birth with mother's maiden name Bacon.
