Biography

Dorothy Hicks was born on 17 Jul 1826 in Westmorland, New Brunswick, daughter of Amos Hicks (1791–1864) and Susanna Ward (1799–1864).

Research Notes

• This may be out to lunch but the parents of this person have always puzzled me. I expect she's from Sackville, but born too late to be in the Township book. She was married in 1850, too early to be in the 1851 census under her own name. Who was the right age to be having a child in 1826 and had reason to name her Dorothy? The obvious answer is Amos Hicks and Susannah Ward, d/o Dorothy Maxwell. Of course that would make her and Milledge 1st cousins. That wouldn't be the last time 1st cousins married in that family, and Dorothy Maxwell did have 100 grand children.

Sons Alexander and Amos death certificates have Dorothy's place of birth as Butternut Ridge or Havelock. Of course there were no Hicks families in 1826 as Amos was still in Sackville then, but it's clear that Dorothy was his daughter. - Stu Ward 21 Oct 2020.

Willard's death cert has her place of birth as Rockport, which is probably accurate.
