Biography

John Arthur was born in 1891.

Although he is prolifically identified in online family trees as the the son of James Hicks and Charlotte Ireland, in fact he was the son of John Wesley Hicks and Mary McCormick.

His baptism was recorded in the Wesleyan Methodist Baptismal Register. It reads: John Arthur Hicks, son of John W. and Mary, born October 20, 1891, baptized February 20, 1894, in Percy Township.

Arthur married Gladys Howard in 1922. Their marriage record reads:

Arthur John Hicks, 31, motorman, bachelor, residing at 534 Dundas Street East, Toronto, born in Ontario, son of John Hicks and Mary McCormick,
Gladys Howard, 29, spinster, residing in Hiawatha, Ontario, born in Ontario, daughter of James Howard and Annie Humber,
Witnesses: Mrs. Mary Hicks, and Mr. H. L. Hicks, both of Toronto,
At 182 Browning Avenue, Toronto, on the 24th July, 1922.

Border crossing 1915: Arthur J. Hicks, born in Godolphin, living in Toronto, going to father John Hicks in Ohio, next of kin, mother Mary Hicks in Peterboro.

1930 Census, with Arthur J. Hicks, white; his wife, Gladys, Indian [First Nations], two children, John Arthur, 6, and George H., 5, both born in Michigan. Arthur noted to have immigrated to the US in 1896, and Gladys in 1922. He was working as an automobile painter.
