Biography

Isaac was born in the English colony in Granville County, North Carolina. Isaac's father Robert Hicks Sr. was a Cooper, and his mother was Sarah. He had 2 brothers and 4 sisters.

Isaac enlisted as a private in Captain John Dickerson's Company, Colonel Archibald Lytle's Regiment of Light Horse, North Carolina Line on April 16, 1776. Isaac was in several skirmishes with the Tories. It seemed that Isaac was the only soldier who had a workable gun in constant use, which was noticed by Nicholis Long, Deputy Quartermaster General. He had Isaac transferred to his jurisdiction. Eventually Isaac was transferred to the Public Shops repairing arms for the Army . He was discharged on October 16, 1778, after serving for two and one‐half years.

Isaac was a cabinet maker by trade.

In 1824, the Hicks were living in Oglethorpe, Georgia. His pension application includes the information that he was 66 years old, living with his wife and son - Elizabeth (61) and William (20).[1]

Isaac and Elizabeth (Hines) also had a son named Robert who married Margaret Acock. Their son William married Elizabeth Lavender.[2]

Isaac died after 26 January 1826,[1] Oglethorpe County, Georgia.[2]

Research Notes

Children: Son William is named in his pension application.[1] His DAR record lists William and Robert.[2] This does not mean they were his only children, but they are the only children with descendants who have joined the DAR by proving their relationship to Isaac through them.

Death date: Citation needed for 4 September 1829. "After 26 January 1826" from pension application file.[1] DAR records have death date of after 20 June 1825,[2] which matches the date of testimony he gave as part of his application. The transcription of his application file includes the note: "Veteran was pensioned at the rate of $8 per month commencing January 26, 1826, for 2½ years service as a private in the North Carolina Continental line."[1]
