Biography

John was born about 1838,^[1] probably in Portmuck, Islandmagee, County Antrim, Ireland, the son of James Hill, a farmer, and Margaret Colville.

In 1864 he married Isabella English in 2nd Islandmagee Presbyterian Church. He was a farmer from Portmuck, Islandmagee and she was also from Portmuck. The witnesses were Samuel English and Mary Ann Napier.^[2]

He passed away in 1897 in Portmuck, Islandmagee, aged 59 years, from enteritis. His death was registered by his son John Hill of Portmuck who was present at his death.^[3] He was buried in the family plot in Ballypriormore Graveyard, Islandmagee.^[4]

   Erected by Isabella Hill in memory of her beloved husband John Hill who died 12th March 1897 aged 59 years. Also her son James who died 11th Feby. 1882 aged 17 years. Also her father-in-law James Hill who died 25th Jany. 1858 aged 60 years. And his wife Margaret who died 24th Novr. 1859 aged 49 years. Also five children. The above-named Isabella Hill died 2nd July 1918 aged 86 years. Susan Hill, died 8th Feb. 1967 aged 91 years.
