James was born about 1834, possibly in Portmuck, Islandmagee, County Antrim, Ireland, the son of James Hill, a farmer, and Margaret Colville.
In 1856 he married Susan English in 2nd Islandmagee Presbyterian Church. He was a mariner from Portmuck, Islandmagee and she was also from Portmuck. The witnesses were Samuel Boyd and Isabella English.[1]
