From findagrave.com:[1] The following information was provided by Barbara Hill, wife of a descendant of William Hill.
William Hill was born in 1784 in New York State and died in late 1850 (or early 1851) near Waskom, Harrison County, Texas. He was the patriarch of a very large family of Hill descendants. He was married (or at least had children with) at least three women. We do not know the name of his first wife (or girlfriend), but he had a son named James Hill, born in 1804 in New York. He then married Ann Walton in 1809 in New York City, and their marriage record has been published in the New York Genealogical and Biographical Record. Their first child was Sarah Ann Hill, born in Poughkeepsie, NY in 1810. Next was Clarissa Walton Hill, born in 1812 somewhere in NY. Then there is a gap. Their next child was Joseph Walton Hill, born in 1817 somewhere in Virginia. My suspicion is that William was in the War of 1812 and away from home for a while, and that he may have gone to the Washington, DC area with other troops to defend it against the British and maybe he liked the area. At any rate, he kept moving south and west his whole life.
Before 1820, William and Ann and their children had moved to Rockingham County, NC. A son William Spalding Hill was born in 1820 and a son Charles in about 1824. William and Ann's family Bible is still in that county with a descendant.
Something must have happened to Ann in the mid 1820s. William left his children in Rockingham County. I don't know who they lived with, except for the oldest son, James. Apparently he and James went to Richland County, SC and William married again, to Catherine [last name unknown]. William lived next door to Samuel Ingram in the 1830 census. The ages of his household match his age, Catherine's presumed age, their first two children, and oldest son James. James married Samuel Ingram's daughter, Elizbeth Ingram, apparently some time between 1830 and 1835. In 1835, Samuel Ingram and his whole family, William Hill and family, and James Hill and family, all moved together to Montgomery County, Alabama. William Hill and Samuel Ingram were neighbors again in the 1840 census, in Alabama. William's sons by Ann Walton were grown by then and joined him there. The oldest two daughters, Sarah Ann and Clarissa, were married and stayed in Rockingham County. They lived next door to each other. Sarah Ann married Isaac Hand; they had no children of their own, but helped to raise a nephew of Isaac's and a niece of Sarah's. Clarissa Walton Hill married Jarrett Bouldin Garrett and had a very large family with many descendants - including the Smothers Brothers. In fact, "those ears" come from William Hill. Those ears are found among Williams' descendants by Ann Walton and his descendants by Catherine, his last wife. I have not yet been able to find living descendants of the oldest son James Hill whose mother is unknown.
Now it gets confusing. Samuel Ingram died in 1840 after the census, and his will names his grandchildren born of his daughter Elizabeth Ingram and James Hill, plus a lot of other relatives, including his son William Ingram. Joseph Walton Hill, second son of William Hill, married William Ingram's daughter Eliza C. Ingram. Some time in the 1840s, William Ingram and his sons and their families, plus Joseph W. Hill and Eliza, plus James Hill and wife Elizabeth and family, all moved to Chambers County, Alabama and were there in the 1850 census. Meanwhile, William Hill and Catherine and their children moved to Harrison County, Texas in 1848 or 1849. William died in early 1851 and Catherine died later the same year. Mary, the oldest daughter by Catherine, married to Douglas M. Jones, became the guardian of her younger brothers and sisters, which would include Mariah Elizabeth Hill (Surles). William and Catherine's property was split among 6 of the youngest children, all by Catherine, but William's probate records in the county courthouse in Marshall name all his other living children (not Charles, who died young).
William Hill's descendants who came to Texas live in Smith County, Upshur County and Harrison County. The Greenwood Cemetery in Marshall is full of Hill descendants. Others live in Alabama.
