Rudolf Saddler Hirschfeld was born in 3rd May 1902 at Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. He was the second son of Eugen Hirschfeld and Annie Saddler.[1] He attended the Brisbane Normal School and Brisbane Grammar School.
He married Olive Mary Besley on 4th August 1930 at Brisbane.[2]
Rudolf enlisted in the Australian Army on 1st January 1938.[3] He attained the rank of Lieutenant with the 11th Australian Light Horse Regiment, re-raised as a Citizens Military Forces unit on the Darling Downs region of Queensland. in December 1941 it was converted into a motor regiment, adopting the designation of the 11th Motor Regiment (Darling Downs Light Horse, Queensland Mounted Infantry). In 1943, the regiment was gazetted as an Australian Imperial Force unit, meaning that it could be deployed outside of Australian territory to fight if necessary. At 41 years of age, and not wishing to take that voluntary step, Rudolf was discharged on 22nd April 1943.
He passed away, aged 75 years, on 5th August 1977 at Brisbane.[4]
