Thomas Hitchcock lived in Takaka, Tasman, New Zealand.

Biography

Thomas Hitchcock was the son of Mary Franklin and Thomas Hitchcock a Master Baker and one of 10 children. He was born in the Bakery at Ford.

Thomas also worked as a Baker in the family business but not being the eldest son he didn't take over the family business..

In the January quarter of 1849, Thomas' marriage to Elizabeth Elliott was registered at Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire. The marriage took place at Quainton.

On the 19th inst,. at Quainton, by the Rev. E. N. Young, Mr Thomas Hitchcock, of Risborough, to Elizabeth, eldest daughter of Mr Elliott, Farmer of Doddershall. Bucks Herald 24 February 1849 PG 8.

Thomas left England and emigrated to Australia about 1849 settling in Melbourne. Elizabeth joined him at a later stage with their son Thomas William. A daughter Mary was born in 1854 in Victoria.

Later that year, the family boarded the 'Marchioness' arriving in Nelson, December 26, 1854.

By 1856, they had moved and settled in Takaka buying land and begun farming. They raised a family of 13 children. Thomas was member of the Takaka Road Board - elected July 2, 1866 and retiring in July 1874. He was also a member of the Long Plain School Committee.

Thomas passed away age 77 after a long illness and is buried at Kotinga Cemetery, Golden Bay,Nelson. He left his land holdings to his sons Alfred and Walter. Probate granted to Henry Hitchcock and Leonard Newlove.

As one of Takaka's early settlers, Thomas is recorded on the Takaka Pioneer's Memorial.
