Biography

Joseph was born in about 1796. He was the son of William Hodgen and Hannah Toplis.[1]

Joseph was baptised on 22 July 1798 in South Wingfield, Derbyshire.[2]

This entry seems very likely, because of circumstantial evidence as explained below. It is slightly later than suggested by the only census entry available, but since he and brother Henry were christened together after an apparent gap of several years, he could well have been born a year or two earlier.
Benjamin from this family definitely married Joseph's wife's sister Ellen/Nellie in 1813 (census entries confirm his birthplace as South Wingfield), and he clearly spelt his name Hodson by then. The VRI also refers to brother John, who marrried there in 1807, as "John Hodson or Hodgin". It is also noteworthy that this parish is fairly close to the Cromford Canal, which opened at the end of the 18th Century, and joined the Erewash Canal.
A possible difficulty is that in the neighbouring parish of Alfreton, a Joseph Hodgson married there in 1822 and lived there for many years with their family. The fact that his birthplace is shown as Alfreton is hardly significant, since the parishes adjoin. However, his surname is consistently spelt as Hodgson. Although no christening record has been found in this name, there is a Joseph of this name who married Dorothy in 1762, and had one or more children christened in each parish with this spelling, so the Joseph at Alfreton could be his son or grandson.

When Joseph was about 22 he married on 22 June 1818 in Stapleford, Nottingham.[2][1]

Marriage was by banns, with consent of parents. Bachelor and spinster of this parish. He made his mark, she signed. Witnesses were Mary Atkin and Dan? Goddams?
According to a private entry in the IGI, they had an earlier daughter Sarah, born about 1830. A further private entry gives the later Sarah as Sarah Ann. (There is also one for Hannah with a christening date ten years earlier, but since the day of the year is identical, this is clearly an error). An 'Armitage family tree' on the web also gives a daughter Caroline in 1833.
George's age given as 10 in the 1841 census appears to be explained by use of the '5-year age group' method, which seems to have been used here for everyone except those aged under 5.

On 1 January 1825 Joseph (age about 29) was employed as a Boat Man. in Stapleford is on the River Erewash, and not far from the Erewash Canal, which was once a busy thoroughfare, carrying such cargo as coal, and probably steel from Ilkeston. He may therefore have been a bargee. 1825 & 1841[1]

When Joseph was about 45 he married in 1841 at 1 JAN 1841. Church Lane, Stapleford, Nottinghamshire.[1]

Joseph died at the age of about 45 between 1841 and 1851 in Assumption of death before 1851 may be incorrect - if conjecture above about his occupation is correct, he may simply have been away from home on census day that year - particularly since his wife is described then as married rather than as widowed.[2]

No likely death record found in Ancestry bmd, nor any local burials in NBI. Notttinghamshire burial index has possible entries at Weston in 1854 (75), Coddington in 1855 (76), and S.Collingham in 1857 (75), but none of these are particularly near Stapleford, nor do the ages look right.
There is however a possible registration, with no age given, in Belper District in Apr-Jun 1842 (covering the area near the Cromford Canal -see notes above), but with the name spelt Hodgson.
